Rover turbo head gasket thickness

Post by TheRealStig »

I know Klinger/Elring are available, but how thick are they. and are they thicker or thinner than oe?

Are any other uprated head sets available for Rover turbos or is it a custom jobbie?

If their are more available does anybody know the thickness and if so which one is the thinnest available?

I`m basically looking for the thinnest uprated gasket available

Thanks

You're looking at 0.9-1.0mm for a klinger. The older composite gasket has got to be thicker. Only other thing I've heard of is a copper gasket, no idea how they they tend to be, but I'd be surprised if it was thinner than the klinger. Worth a call to Ferriday?

I`ve heard of copper before, but like you I`m not sure on the thickness of the gasket, although I have been told they are a good option. Ferriday a good place to call?

Mark do you know whether the 0.7mm gaskets from Cometic are specifically for the d16 or do they supply other models

Same difference as just skimming the block some more though mate, its just inviting another possible problem in to the equastion.

yeah thats a point, theres always the greater possibility of det too

Is it wise to take too much off a block though?

Dont see the difference in skimming block and headgasket thickness in regards to det ?

Skimming the block to get 8.5:1 may well see the cambelt tensioner needing modding and a different cambelt being used.

When taking this much off make sure the machine shop put chamfers back on the piston entrance so you dont crack the rings when you fit them.

yeah there is no difference with skimming the block and thinning out the head gasket, the distnace from piston to head is the same either method.

i personally dont put chamfers on the top of the cylinders.

I thiink 8.5:1 on a T-series would run pretty smooth, considering a m16 is 8.1 std?

Standart T Series is 8.5:1 so it will run as smooth as that :)

cool. I thought I would really struggle to get those figures

How much is usually skimmed just off the block to achieve 8.5? Considering I`ll be using the full O-series set-up and not with M-rods

I would imagine your going to have serious problems with engine height in relation to cambelt fitting with O rods ?

With M rods you need about 30 thou off the block.

skim the head a lot as well, might get you close but you'll have to take some measurements before you start out.

Yeah thats what I was trying to say Dan in the pm, because I`m using the full O-series set-up I`m going to need more taking off than O+M set-ups, arent I

Cant I drill new holes for the cambelt tensioner and use a different belt?

After I`ve taken measurement of the O-series rod, I can use m-rods as a guide, with the o/m having 30 thou skimmed from the block I can work out what will need taking from my block

Like you say Drew, because it will need more than the o/m set-up taking off, if I take some off the head too it should compensate, thats why I suggested the thinner head gasket, so I didnt need to take more off the block than the o/m block and didnt need to take too much off the head to achieve 8.5 cr
