Problems

Post by GT_NICK »

right here we go.

Ive got the rover with a d16 unit in it and its having some troubles.
The engine is getting to 5k rpm and them limiting, it has never done this before as the limiter is somewhere near 6.5k rpm. also when it gets to 5k it stops there and makes a strange hissing noise,
whats going on,
it goes passed 5k rpm when in neutral

I think if the exhaust is blocked, putting hand near exhaust helps determine this. If your hand gets VERY hot - could mean the cat is blocked. This diagnosis technique worked on a Mondeo of my mates anyhow.

Nick, have you checked your ECU for any weird fault codes?

it may be just the back box, the baffle plates can break/rot away & the glass wool inside can block the exit.

split the exhaust system from the cat & try the car for power.
if the power is still down its most likely the cat.

as a bodge you can knock the core out of the cat to get you away untill its time for the mot.
