Lowered Cars

Post by matt077 »

hi all

fitted my new tracking rod arms today then took to a garage to have the tracking done

went to my local tyre sales to find i couldnt get the car on the ram as its too low, so i went to other garage, after driving around for a hour and been to 5 garages, i ended up going to one to find they was not too busy and they could do it, but again the car was too low and couldnt get on the ram, after 40mins of tring they got it on :o

how many other people have this problem? i've had lowwed cars before but never had problems before, the car is lowwed on gmax springs and shocks, before it was just springs and had no problems with them

if your car is too low to get onto the ramps at an mot test center, its a fail iirc.

matt077 fail

All is not lost, as mark says... some mot places (generally ones with more modern equipment) have flush ramps.

And contrary to popular belief, its only the ramps that count, if it wont go onto the brake rollers its not a fail.

A good garage will have a fancy accelerometer dooberry that they can use for the brake test. Just involves them taking the car for a little spin.

The decelerometer test, although tbh most cars will go in the rollers, ive just about got a porsche 911gt2 in the rollers last month, but the bumper was a nats from the ground.

I know my car is low, but previous experience of garages is that they have a few blocks of wood to act as a ramp to get onto the ramp??

When I had my 220 I had to remove the bumper in hi-q's car park so I could get the tracking done as it wouldn't go on the ramps

On another note, I can see why you'd have it lowered that much, as you're often likely to push the absolute limits of it's handling capability as a daily drive.

My tester always uses flush floor ramps and doesnt put it on the brake tester.

Tracking place is the same , luckily.

With both my evo's, they reversed the car on, never had a problem.

When i had the tracking done, they used flush mounts

I'm not 100% on that TBH - pretty sure an MOT station can't fail a car because their equipment is insufficient to test your car. There's no requirement in law/MOT to meet a certain ramp angle.....

Be interested to find out the answer for sure.

If they cant get it on the ramps, they cant do the majority of the mot test...

depends on the generosity of the testers. I know of at least one case where they had done a few of the off ramp tests before they tried to get it on the ramp... because they couldnt get it on they issued a fail notice and charged him.

At which point i would have give them a big STFU and walked out tbh.

They should check they are capable of carrying out the entire test, a car thats too low isnt a fail , its not tested.

They broke a ball joint as rather than using a second spanner on the joint's cast, they used the end throw of the joint to help loosen it as the swung off it. Then when they did the camber, they used a metal hammer on the tops of my suspension mounts where you adjust the rebound, bending them. I spent more on replacing parts they broke than on the geometry. What also made me angry is i took the car to RSE up in wales to do an overall check of the car and they said the geometry was way out. I did write a letter to Addison but they never replied. Instead i wrote a thread on the MLR and put off the midland evo community going there.

Yeah thats a bad experience alright.

Why didnt you mention any of this in the thread when you had the work done though ?

I only ever have tracking done and they always use two spanners, suppose it depends who does the work though as they do go through a few newcomers. :(

Guess i was just happy at the time the geometry was done... even though i didn't realise it was still shite lol. We live and learn.
