Dins Ti Mk3, Its here !

Post by Din »

Ok, after the Ti has been plauged with overheating issue for about 9 months now and counltless attempts at fixing it i have been at giveing up point for a while now :(

So while browseing through ebay the other day i found this... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221027606516? ... 1423.l2649

So i put a bid in after few questions too the seller and won it :)

Anyway went down to southampton to get it today, looked around... very pleased so paid up and drove off... i got about 2 miles  pulled in to a petrol station after smelling gearbox oil... drip drip drip drip   reached down and gave the driveshaft a tug... cobbler in a bucket springs to mind... EDIT damn the swear filter :annoy:

So after calling every company i knew and getting silly quotes... i turned around and went back to the seller

He was actually very good about it, he had only done a few miles every no and again in it for months and hadnt noticed an issue !

So bearing in mind the engine is fantastic... and the body (bar a patch of rust on one wheelarch) its A1 mint imo for a 12 year old car ! FAR better than my own... he knocked £100.00 off so i can get it transported home... (gluten for punishment :| )

So by wednesday evening i should have this Ti at work ready for a very swift gearbox rebuild :)

I am actually tempted to keep this standard, it would almost be a shame to mod it :) it drove so well, has good pirelli tyres with good tread on etc really nice :)

Anyway, here is the pic i took just before i left.

thats reasonable money even with the gearbox fault.

oh and on keeping it standard.... it should be a sin not to lower a ti! makes them look so much better.

Yeah, it is good value, I have paid him £325.00 for it, its costing me £70.00 to have it delivered, and will cost around £20.00 for a pair of 6208s.

On the lowering thing... yeah, i agree ! i have lowered my current one, and the one i had before had been lowered, but tbh, it scrubs out tyres quicker, is a harder ride etc, plus i tow with it also ! i love Tis, i just think perhaps i should appreciate it for what it is (being so tidy), no worrys about speed bumps etc.

You are right with looks though.

My current one and previous ones have been perfect to my eyes.

That's very nice. I'd say the same keep it standard. I'm tempted not to even up the boost on mine from standard.

Oh ill fit a maual controller and gauge, they go like the clappers once the boost is sorted!

But I wouldn't do that unless the box has been done, haveing said that, I think they all have a tendency to wear out the diff bearings around 100k, my first one did it at 95k that had a boost controller on it at 12psi on a standard box.
V79 hasn't had the chance as I rebuilt the box before I put it on the road!

I must admit after removing the cover off that gearbox I sold yesterday It doesn't look like a hard job to do to replace the bearings I guess it is just very messy if your doing it to a box that has seen constant use.

I'll just stick with the standard boost for the time being at least until I can afford to do the box and steel cage bearing the one on the car. If it wasn't for the lack of work I wouldn't have sold the box I did yesterday I'd have just got someone to gimme a hand to fit it but seeing as the one that is on is working fine I'm ok to wait until something happens and I have to do it.

I always work on the saying of if it ain't broke don't fix it. Or if your skint leave it alone til you can afford to do it.

Lol, I learned the hard way with my first one... luckily I nursed it back and fixed it for a Tenner!

Changeling diff bearings is easy and cheap, getting the box on and off is a pita.

"grits teeth" not sure... in my mind it needs a new head or block... perhaps just a whole engine !

It has a dent in the bonnet, missing grill fins... rust starting on the NSR wheelarch and rear quarter panal.
Pas leak has soaked the antiroll bar bush and it knocks abit... etc etc.

My therory was to take the good bits off it that i want to keep for this one... sell some bits, keep some spares then either sell it as spares or repair or the other option :(

What ever happens i cant loose money here ! and thats the end of it...

Looks like a really nice example there Din. I'd be tempted to chuck in a new clutch and release bearing while you have the box off, for the sake of it - other than that it looks really pristine, same colour as my GSI. :D

Also looks like it has been owned by an enthusiast at some point as the side repeaters have been changed.

It has yes prior to its present owner it only had 1 owner... and he had it from 2000 !! in fact the last guy had two Tis apparently ! everything on it has been replaced for genuine parts, it has a brand new slave and master cylinder with a £300.00 reciept in the last couple of months.

The only other change is the brakes, they are grooved discs and fresh pads front and rear !

Im pleased with it, i think i have a virtually new clutch in the garage ! but i will check the one thats in there also.

Cant wait to get it back here :)

Yeah, it's in lovely contion James, its just a shame I have been unable to fix v79.... it must be a head or block issuez I have done everything else, but with money I have put in to it in the last few months...there comes a point if you know what I mean.

Have you done anything with your silver one yet?

No Brad... i did notice my top hose looks very unshapely compared to the new Ti ! like its been pressureizing etc, dont forget when i got the car a couple of years ago it had a blown hg... and it had clearly corroded bore 3, and had a new rad due to pipes comeing off etc etc, i think somewhere alonfg the line either the head or block has had enough... i dont have a spare useable head right now (i have one but with one or two bent valves)... but tbh i dont want to just throw money at another bloody hg and head rebuild if perhaps the block is the issue, hell for what i have just paid for this other one its hardly worth it... and seeing as the body work on the new one is soo good, i may as well cut my losses, take the good stuff back off V79 (for example a brand new rad!) keep some spares return it to standard and more than likely let the rest go to heavan. I dont see any other option so that im not loseing the money i have been trying to save recently

My diff bearings and driveshaft oil seals turned up today... but when driveing it in and out of the workshop i could hear a slight white noise from the input shaft bearing also (my old on did that)... so i think i may get that lower bearing also and put off the rebuild untill next weekend when i can have the whole day instead of just an afternoon.

Still pleased with it though :)

Nothing more done yet... though i have now ordered both the upper and lower input shaft bearings from Jon, so the x4 bearings that are well known to give issues will be done along with new drive shaft oil seals, total cost for that lot includeing postage is a little shy of £100.00.

So as long as i get the input shaft bearings it will be done on Saturday 8)

I couldnt resist another pic when i was leaving work today though
