puddle in boot :(

Post by GeraintUk »

Guys, i've just found a puddle in the boot on the Tourer.
It was on the offisde part and not in the spare wheel bay.

Is it a common problem that rear light cluster seals can leak ?
The boot seal is a tad the worse for wear, so was already planning on replacing that after the boot build for ICE was done (as it would make changes to the seal etc).

Are the odds on the cluster or the tailgate seal ?
Does the old silicone sealer trick work for this ?

cheers

Odds on G its gona be the rear light seals as on 220's.
The silicon trick worked on mine and stoped it leaking. I found the only time i got water in there after that was if i jet washed round the rear lights, but with normal rain they are fine.

Can't speak for tourer, but Coupes have a drain pipe (no, really) which goes along the roof and downthrough the boot out. Mine was disconnected on my Jap, causing water ingress. Thats all sorted now though :D

Have a looksy behind the trim, i found on the coupe that some vents where allowing water in. Silcon sealant around them and thankfully it seems to have stopped. I did at first try the lights but this didnt cure it.

your find that theere is two vents in the boot. one on each side (under the side trim) tape / cover these up as that's what was causing my boot to fill up.

chris do you mean the plastic vent with the rubber flap on them ?
did think it could be of cause, but what's the purpose of them in the first place, surely i serves some kind of function ?

Yep thats what I mean. The function they serve is to allow air in and out of the car ... for instance when closing the door you force air flow in the car - a completely sealed car (air tight) wont allow you to close the door due to the pressure. These vents are to allow the flow of air. However as we all know Rovers dont seal up air tight at the best of times so blocking them off with some duct tape just stops water from getting in and due to the many other little holes you can still close your doors.

Now that probably sounded like me rambling on about something you can't understand as I haven't explained it but well I'm getting through a bottle of Jack D quite quickly and well can't think straight.

BTW its because the foam seal (why rover use foam is beyond me) has perished. You dont want to cover up the vent as chances are its not the vent itself, but a faulty seal.

I used silicon sealant around the hole of the vent, I also took the rear bumper off and sealed around the other side of the vent. As Rover decided it would be a good idea to rivet them into place the new vents i bought are useless.

After sealing all around the vent the car has not leaked - RESULT :D

Just an idea, but if you dont know where the water is coming from wouldn't it be easier to stand by the car with a watering can pouring water all over the area (moving slowly) and watching where it comes from?

That's what I did. And mine turned out to be the little vents. I took mine out and put sealant all round the gasket, then all round the outside before putting it back on. Problem solved.

yep, might just try that as it's letting in quite a bit, so it should be pretty obvious where it's coming in.

i'll give it a whirl at the weekend ;)
