Well my ZS180 is slower than a Ti on paper at least, and I don't have too much trouble with the 1.9 and 2.0 TDi's
They seem quick to begin with going from normal revs (when I see the black smoke start pouring out the back), but they seem to need to change up just as I hit 5000rpm, so I've still got 2000revs of good power left. Trouble is I have to back off then to avoid running up the back of them. But they're convinced they're the quickest thing on the road so won't pull over

i heard about that 535d, sequential twin turbo, wee turbo for initial fast boost, and a bigger turbo takes over for bigger power figures ,so should have a broader power/torque band too, gonne be quick!
did someone moan about the i denoting injection earlier?? I though this meant intercooler on diesels, person also said about anyone heard of a fuel injected diesels, aren't all diesels fuel injected???
been wondering how this common rail this works, not up on my diesels really, i know it has something to do with being able to produce an awful lot of fuel pressure 1200 psi or something crazy like that!
why has no one every made a surpercharged diesel? maybe make more than power band more usuable
dont try and race the golf gtdi although they are claimed to be 150 bhp its alledged they are actualy around the 180 figure exactly the same as vws flagship gti of the time which was more expensive hence why vw played down the figures of the gtdi. I tried and couldnt get ahead untill we where past legal speeds. on another note the new gtis 200bhp seem easy prey they seem to come on boost very late giving the ti the edge.

I blew a new Golf gti away in the coupe......when i had the ti i had more trouble leaving the tdi/gt tdi's than the gti's on the motorway

if i had the notes the golf would be in the garage...or better yet a bora
to be honest, i dont give two poops about pollution diesel vs petrol, as theyre both shite compared to alcohol cars that they run over the pond...
I should hope the Golf TDi GTi would show up the Honda powered coupe. It has lots more power and lots more torque. The Coupe with the 1.6 only just has enough power to pull the skin off a rice pudding

Some type of Audi A4 Avant Derv also floored it in what i can only assume was 5th gear and it took all of the Ti's power to keep up with him between 70-90mph (in 5th also). They are quick some of these new diesels.
(in 5th also).
That's why you 'appeared' to struggle. You played into the diesels hands.... that's the area where they would have some advantage. Select 3rd or even 4th under the same circumstances to get the turbo to wake up and the result should be significantly different. Well it would and is in one of mine...
Never forget: Top Gear is NOT always the right gear to be in...... don't often go there ... full of Clueless Clarkson Clones..
and Rover Knockers ....... apparently...
Apparently ... in a parallel universe MGJohn drives ....wait for it..... A ..
I can't understand this thread. Golf GT TDi s are not really quick, and none of the 1.9 TDi VAG engines have ever beaten my VVC let alone my vitesse. Although the 530d is pretty quick though - I once raced one in my vitesse and only due to my (much practiced) start I had the edge to 60. As for tomcat turbos - I can't think of any diesel which would have a prayer! It's not just about torque - A lot of the rovers are pretty light compared to very modern cars. Just my opinion!
i got my vreg ti, m3(52plate) and a c-max tdci, obviously the m3 the quickest and the tdci is the slowest but i gotta say the tdci in the c-max is very punchy and i like driving it the 6 gears are good as well
Alot of this is down to the derv's in gear acceleration figs, and nothing to do with a flat out run through the gears. The Golf GTDI still isnt really very quick at 0-60mph, and it would only take a petrol car of similar weight, and the same bhp to leave it standing. But the 4th/5th gear incremental acceleration figs show the deisel's strengths. They are sometimes under 5sec at 30-50 and 50-70mph. A petrol turbo car isnt shameful at the same speeds, but they do not develop the peak torque until a bit higher in the rev range normally, and in the case of a nasp car, alot higher up the rev range. Match against a deisel for evenly with the petrol and deisel engine both is the best gear possible then the petrol can win! The MGZR 113ps deisel will leave a ZR160 behind easily at 30-50 in 4th gear, but line up with the 160 spinning at 3500rpm in 2nd (30mph) and it would be bye bye smoky!
hmm interesting comments,by the way my ti pulled away in 3rd and 4th against a 206gti 180 he was amazed when we got to the next set of lights just sat there with his mate looking at the ti all
