Theres a post on this already.
Essentially Rover badged the earlier models ti and the later ones as a 600 (possibly to save money and effort on different badge types)
Generally pre face lift models wore the 620ti badge with the post facelifts having the 600, but practically it depends what they had in the parts bin.

mine has electric drivers seat..
early cars had better pistons allowing more boost . supposedly..
hence why early cars have turbo written on inlet manifold
whereas late cars have injection written on manifold..

mine has the leccy height adjuster too and turbo rather than injection on the manifold... no AC or fogs tho
ps badged as "620ti"
its as old as the hills

As mentioned, it has electric height adjuster in the earlier models

I think the pistons are much the same, earlier T16 turbos such as 800 and 220s had a different type of piston, but I'm pretty sure all 600s have the same.
The difference is one melts at 13 psi, whereas the other one crumbles.
IIRC the manifold is just another cost saving attempt. Rather than having branded for different things
maxcady wrote:I know the pre 97 ? do have a height adjuster ,
I have found the older models faster as well .
anyone else found this?
The earlier models have dizzy setups instead of wasted spark - although the quoted performance figures are the same, several people reakon the dizzy setup was slightly quicker.
The real difference between 620ti and 600 badging is down to the whole pre/post face lift.
Other difference between pre and post facelift models:
Post:
Wasted Saprk
Lower 3rd Brake light
Cup holders built into door cards
Stat in top hose.
Lack of Electric Seat adjuster
Pre:
Metal Stat Housing attached to engine
Raised 3rd Brake light
Electric Seat Adjuster

600 or 620?
According to a section of the www.austin-rover.co.uk website, all Rover started to be simply badged as 200, 400, 600, etc so the smaller engined models (e.g., 214) didn't look inferior in the car part next to a 1.6 Escort. They applied the philosophy across the whole range as Rover policy. Also, BMW didn't like the BMW-style of model naming on their "British" brand.
So I heard, anyway.
So my 1994 ti says:
620ti
Turbo on the phlenum
Has air-con as option
. Currently need recharging
Electric adjustable driver's seat - no use whatsoever. It's permanently on the lowest setting!
And a Longlife stainless exhaust

I have also heard it mentioned that it was a deterrent for potential joy riders theives not knowing if the car was std or turbo'd. Probably complete nonsense, but it's what i've heard.
Either way the newer Ti's are better than the older one's. They have to be, they're younger

They all had chocolate pistons...
Firstly *all* the Rover 600 models had chocolate pistons (it was the early 200 models that had Mahle).
Secondly, people seemed to get a little confused about this Mahle business. The early 200 models had Mahle pistons - they did NOT have Mahle *forged* pistons.

So, in finality, you are saying that the early 200's had "genuine" Mahle pistons?

Not true im afraid, many 600 owners/ex 600 owners have found mahles inside the engines on very early Tis.Like myself on a bog standard car with original engine and no rebuild. The early Mahles as used in the old 820Turbos have a longer skirt, deeper crown and reduced the CR to 8.1:1 , its generally accepted that they can take around 20psi of boost, but people have run 23/24PSi when using the rods with oil squirt hole and larger bore floating gudgeon pin.
But its all in the arhives we've been building for years if you care to have a lookaround
Mark
