Gotta be the K for me
When ticking over from cold the engine sounds nasty and tickety, but the exhaust is putting out quite a nice deep burble (although quiet on the standard system).
When flooring it though, that roar just does it for me!

Well, the KV6 powered ZS 180 I was in the other day sounded orgasmic.
But like many others, the sound of a roaring V8 gets me really weak at the knees. Being on a main road, I often hear quite a few Rover V8 powered Range Rovers blasting up and down.
They don't shift as much, but they sound absolutely beastly!

got to be the d series i've only ever had in the family the SOHC so on that i've got a induction kit that just grunt like a c**t (put your lips together puff your cheeks and make an R sound with your tongue on the top of your mouth) i love that sound from it
and with the added rear silencer i've been told it makes it sound like a scooby

Engine Sound
I think this would have been great had someone put a sound file or video file of each engin at Idle, Cruise Say 30-50mph and the one at full Pelt hard Acceleration as it's hard for people who have never heard them to give an informed reply or maybe it's just because I love the sounds of all engines cause as in life everyone is stunning to someone.
AS WIlliam Wallace/Mel Gibson once said "FREEDOM!"
I agree with Si, they may not have the character of a 6 or 8, but with extra boost and a mongoose they really do sound like they are just plain quick.

Your all wrong. I am a big fan of the V8 after working at a tvr garage but the best sounding rover lump is the V6 from a 6R4. Nuff said.

Seeing as this thread has been resurrected - The L-series apparently now has 4 votes.Punx0r wrote:Unsurprisingly the diesel lumps have no votes!
To all those who voted for the L-series - Mad as a sack of slightly damaged stoats, the lot of you!
(although, to be fair, once tuned a bit, the sound of an L-series on full throttle is quite aggressively petrol-like, and I actually prefer it to the T16 when you're driving like a loon!)
V8 FTW!

got to be the mighy v8 for me, i love the sound of that engine.
The T series in turbo form sounds sweet with a loud back box.
Mind you so does the d series with a good back box and a cone filter, nice roar past 4000 revs

V8 ftw. ESPECIALLY if you've heard it through twin 5" straight through exhausts on a 3500 trike conversion... Oh my lord, I wanted that engine, just the engine, to start up and keep in my house as musical entertainment.

I don't know if it counts but the best sounding Rover (well, MGR) I've actually heard being driven hard was the SV at TOTB in 2006. Even on idle it was crackling but once the throttle was opened in anger.....

Perhaps I'm being picky, but the poll is tottally flawed. The thread title is best sounding ROVER engine, yet there is a HONDA engine at the bottom of the poll. So if we are really talking best sounding engine ever FITTED to a Rover, surely the Merlin engined SD1 has to be a contender along with the turbine engined P6.
However, from the list of engines available in the poll, it has to be V8 though I much prefer the smoothness of a straight 6.
