Who do you have to kill to get an expansion tank ?

Post by darwin »

800 expansion tanks are like frigging gold dust . Any that do appear on eBay are going for nearly £50 second hand . They dont even cost that new , although I do believe they're on back order for the next million years as they fail so often .
Is there an alternative ?
Does someone else make them ?

Think I might start making my own , probably last longer .

Try to get hold of a MK1 tank. They're a lot better.
Job.

If I was keeping the car I would consider something like a stainless steel one . But I'm selling it soon so I want the least expense .

Is it normal for the 800's to die.

Mine is all cracked on the outside. Don't know how deep they go, but certainly aren't just surface scratches.

Obvously the cracking is caused by a build up of presure can you not get a different cap that will releave some of the presure and stop the expansion tank swelling and cracking :?:

My cap hisses all the time lol. It also leaks if you give car some welly. Must change the cap, though whether this will help stop the cracking i don't know as the cap is supposed to leak when the pressure gets too high.

the caps are the same as other rovers, same pressure (1bar ish)?

its probably the size and or shape that leads to the problem?

i think the later ones were made from a crap material also.

my mk1 has fracture marks around the cap area , but is not fully broken through yet and causes me no trouble...

i know the little pipe bits can snap off aswell...

Perhaps just fit one from anoter rover?

i wouldnt do an ALI tank, cos then you can see whats going on without checking...

I was thinking about one from a 200 , but its smaller . Problem with the 800 one is its quite large and obviously holds a large amount of coolant for a reason ???
When I bought the car about a year ago the tank was cracked around the lip , so I put another one in (second hand) . I noticed it had stress fractures around the neck but I was keeping an eye on it . But the other day I noticed steam coming out of the engine bay . The "nipple" that feeds into the tank from the overflow pipe is snapped off . I was lucky I noticed it when I did . Car didnt lose that much coolant and it didnt overheat .

i deffo recon the mk1 800's were built better.

everything got cheap and nasty when they went to the mk2.

for example, CTS sensor, how many do you hear of failing on mk1 rovers?

Tha last batch of Mk2 ones have a better reputation. Don't mess around with other ones, it's not called an expansion tank for nothing! When tha tank is too small you'll lose coolant for no reason and end up with too little the next ride.

On an alloy one you just have a sight tube on the side you can see the level then

I have one from my Mk2 which started leaking from the small front return pipe so I got a newy from Rover. I was thinking of getting a brake bleed nipple and tapping the plastic bottle and screwing the bleed nipple into it while using a sealant of some sort. As for the crazing, I have seen loads do this but never had one leak from there. The new one is nice and clean ad really makes my engine bay look a lot nicer than seeing that rusty coloured one. Also, while changing it I cleaned the inner wing area of all the road grime which had built up over the years.
Clean, new bottle with nice turquoise coolant looks the bees knees.

Have to admit that the MK1s seem of a sturdier construction.

Out of 25 800's so far I've only had one tank crack. My mate on the other hand is using my Tahiti Sterling has killed 3 since christmas :o but to be fair we think the HG has gone. :(

The MK1 tanks are definately better, I have a Mk1 tank on my MK2 Sterling Fastback.

I've got a SS one kicking around somewhere, think it needs a slight touch up with a welder tho, and the one on the Vitty outside is cracked to buggery too round the cap

Chr15e beat me to it (and unstaged me!) - we've had 5 800's and no problems with expansion tanks at all. I must admit that they're a rare sight in the scrappy though.

I've wondered for a while if a MK1 tank would fit a MK2, thanks for the tip :)

i just bought a 99 vitesse and mine is totally screwed now. i think it's cos there was not enough fluid in the tank and now i topped it up it leaves puddles like a naughty puppy wherever it goes :( although it didn't overheat i'm still worried i may have done some damage somewhere covering 250 odd miles on motorways before i noticed. and perhaps booting it a bit. well, it is my new toy ;)

how long did it take to get one from rover? reckon it's still possible? and how much was it? any help welcome

Mine was leaking from the cap. Got a new cap and now it must have increased the pressure as no more hissing. The bottom of the tank now leaks.

Luckily got one off ebay (well if i hear from the seller) for £15 :D

My current one has cracks all over the shop.

I found the receipt as I am keeping all receipts for major items since this car has full service history up to my purchase of June 2004. The tank assembly was back ordered for two days and cost the princely sum of £47.44 plus vat. A total of £55.74 was paid up front and the item was in the parts place when expected.
