216 Coupe

Post by JA1987 »

I will be selling my mini soon and upgrading (well, getting something bigger).I like the look of the coupes but due to insurance costs the only one I could afford would be the 1.6. So what do you guys think of them? Rover engine or Honda.
Cheers

The Honda engine is more powerful at 116bhp vs 108bhp plus it has no head gasket issues and is apparantly good for over 200k miles.

i used to have the sohc 216 gti, great car, not much between that and the 220 gsi power wise, just no leather! :( did have hgf twice though, but was hardly driven conservatively!

Quite a big difference, actually (111bhp vs 136bhp, plus all that T16 torque!).

I would be inclined to look for a nice, late 216 with the D16 (Honda) engine. They sound really good with a decent exhaust system and induction kit fitted!
Roverlessness - what a strange feeling!

B16A from a Civic / CRX

Or if you can afford it B18C4 from the later Civics, loads of torque

Honda engine definately.

In 2 years of ownership mine has been good as gold engine wise. Dont suppose the power difference would be too great tbh, both about the same, both revvy, but I'd put money on the honda being much more reliable.

Why not the 2l NASP T series.

Insurance won't cost any more, tax will be same, economy similar. T series nasp is a great cruiser. Far better than the SOHC Honda or the K series if you plan on using it as a daily driver in my opinion.

Solid engine unlike the K.

Honda y0.

T16 coupe is too heavy. D16 coupe will handle a lot better.

And K series is a bit of a timebomb

Yep Honda engine, the gf's brother has a 216 coupe with the honda engine in it, sounds lovely with the exhaust it has, and drives lovely as well, cracking wee car and lots of fun.

Ok so I will probably go with the honda engine, but with so many mint rover engined coupes for sale is it worth just dropping a B16 into a rover engined coupe and if so what would this do to the insurance? And how difficult is the swap?

if you cant afford the 2litre, the honda is an easy choice over the 1.6K any day of the week.

as said, the 2litre makes a nice lazy drive with a fair bit more power and more torque and less reving needed.

i used to think ragging it everwhere was cool in the metro, then realised it did my head in, and now the 420 is much more laid back :D

A 220 is definetly not an option for me, the insurance would be 2.5k a year and i am definetly not paying that. I think it will be a 1.6, but the rover engined coupes are a better deal than the honda's with lower mileage examples.

That depends on your engineering knowledge, your skill with your hands, your ability to read about the conversions and not want spoon feeding, erm your wallet, your problem solving abilities....

Its possiable, and has been done. Jonny was the orginal, then there have been others that have posted pics and tales of there problems.

To Sum up, its possiable, as are most things, but is bloody hard, and don't expect to much 'spoon feeding' allot of people will help as long as you are putting in the effort.

Ritchie

Edit i just re-read your post, you said dropping a B16 into a ROVER engine coupe. Ermm triple any of the work that has been done before, examples above were off B16's into a Honda engine coupe

Mines pretty close to that, no need to dream :P JDM Teg nudges it in looks over the Coupe IMO, the arch lips tend to age the design now.

Can deffo recommend a DOHC 1.6 Coupe, no end of fun and a pretty damn capable car. Dont use B16 and drop in the same sentence.
