Self-starting car...

Post by Dom »

Guys -

I drove up from Bournemouth to St.Albans on Saturday - and after leaving my car in the car park for about 45 mins, came back to find the car starting itself (with no keys in and immobiliser theorectically on) and idling for about 5 secs before dying off again.

This happened about 2 or 3 times, then I locked the car with the blipper (got a clifford 600 alarm/immobiliser) unlocked it again, and the problem seemed to go...

The car may have had remote start at some point - this was Raistlins car originally - but I can't activiate it with the blipper, so unsure if it actually DOES...

Had driven through about 1.5 hours of rain beforehand - earthing possibilities or other...?

Anyone had these symptoms before, or know what could cause it..?

scary :o

I'm wary of Cliffords stuff already. My friends Concept 500 system actually locked his car with the keys still in the ignition when he went for a furtive slash in a lay-by a few years ago.

Highly embarassing!

Give me a simple one-button Sigma any day!!

It regularly unlocks the car door when I'm away - high security stuff...

:(

Can this happen on an injection car without the ecu being engaged..? I'm guessing not.... leading me to think the alarm is stuffed..?

Anyone..?

That heap of Clifford sh1t never worked properly from the time it was "serviced" by a certain company in Luton :x In fact, IIRRC, they cut through the main loom.

Best thing for it IMO, is to tear it out and start again :(

Sounds like you have the same ghost that drove bradharris's car into a landy. :)

Best bet is to rip it out and start a fresh. I found an old alarm on mine that was flattening my battery. Glad I took it out as the wiring was shocking.

He feckin didn't :x

He didn't know what it was so just cut into it in an attempt to pick up lives and returns. Then decided it wasn't required so cut through the whole loom.

I think ALL the time it is down to the installer. As Paul has said it worked fine when the professional installed it. Just when the luton cowboy touched it with his "sexy fingers" it plays up.

A friend of mine is a alarm installer and auto electrician and while he is the first to admit there are much better alarms out there he did say he has never had a problem with one he has fitted.

Had my Sigma for 15 years. Push button = locks car, immobilises car. Push button again = unlocks car, deactivates the immobiliser.

Doesn't work if the key is in the ignition.

Not at all sure how 'too little' can be better in the case of a car alarm?

Hi Dom

It does have remote start but was disabled and reset.
If you have someone with an old laptop and serial connector use the lead and try to do a diagnostic on the alarm and see whats happening.

This never happened to me but 1 day prior to me selling the car the alarm played up and effectively stranded my 40 meters away from the house with the alarm blaring for 2hours!

But I managed to enter the disabling code and then removed smart windows as it was playing up.

Dom does it just unlock?

Check all earths...........think in the engine bay there are about 6 earths. But from memory none are for the alarm. Think the alarm is earthed from within the cabin under the center console.

i had a sigma on my old orion ghia, it worked perfect for the 3 years i had the car, my golf vr6, which had a clifford used to open the windows after 30 seconds of locking, i had to disconect the battery every time i left it, so i just got it ripped out.

lots of people swear by clifford, i hate them with a passion, always big problems.

Mine's fine. Only problem I had was when the fuse wire dropped out, simple fix. :P Most of the problems stem from the fact a monkey with a certificate has to fit it for you for it to mean anything.

For 'deficere' please substitute 'removus tutti crapus nil necessarium et fancyus blingus maxime displayus sed etiam minimus valu practicus' :P

(Need a sit-down after that!!)

As well as this and if the car needs to be left in a dodgy area (Tettenhall, for example  ), I do have a Krooklok and flick the inertia switch up to kill the fuel pump.
