I drove the bosses Volvo S40 2.0 TD, bloddy hell it goes! i think it quicker that mine!, it been that long.
but seriously it felt really fast!

My car has been off the road since November 2009. spent just over 2k on it since then and also been paying £180 to pay my insurance for the year for the last 4 months, yet the thing is, it has not moved and inch or even been turned over this year. what a mug.

Goodness knows when it will be back on the road, still waiting on parts coming from a couple of GB's, i want to do everthing at the one time instead of been under the bonnet or underneath it every odd weekend and actually get out and drive the blommin thing!

am i crazy or just an enthusiast?

I know exactly how you feel Kevin.

Mine went off the road in August and I last started the engine in October before proceeding to pull it apart. Even though it had sat for a few months, it still roared into life on the first attempt and despite running a bit rough for the first few minutes, settled down into a nice deep burble. Almost brought a tear to my eye just stood there listening to it.

I'd say we were both a bit crazy

But hang in there, keep ploughing on and it'll be up and running in no time! I've certainly got itchy fingers about getting mine back.

it's all good in the end when it's back on the road

Well i started my coupe up just for a few mins last saturday, and it fired straight up and sounded really nice too! The car has been sat in my mates garage most of the time since July, and i've taken it out 3 times since then for a 10-20mile drive. It has no tax now though, and the insurance renewal is up too!

I'll get it insured at the same time as my Suzuki next month, and now i've nearly finished doing up my flat im nearly ready to start working on it! I'm trying to save up some cash to spend on getting into immaculate condition again, and im at £1700 odd so far. That's not including the Big brake kit and stainless silverstorm down pipe i have already brought/ordered for it.

I have no idea when it will all be done, but being sensible i need to get the paintwork, body detailing and undersealing done as the first jobs, along with a major service. I doubt i'll get any mechanical work or modifications done in 2010, however i really want to take the engine out to re-build the box, change the clutch and the cambelt, but all that is probably not essential if im just going to pootle along to a few car shows, which isn't what i ideally want to be doing with it.

I'm missing mine too, off the road since end of july last year. I hope all the time, money and work involved will be worth it. I'm still a long way off driving the car and I'm still only building my engine. Still got the suspension, brakes, bodywork and interior to work on..

I have about 100 receipts for the build/project so far and I hav'nt looked back over them to see how much I have spent thus far. Its safe to say its probably met the budget I had planned for the engine build already and I dont have all the bits yet and I hav'nt even began to put it together yet.

I think its safe to say I'm crazy too.

Those S40s do shift too, my mate has had two, the new and old style ones - very good cars. Neck and neck with a Ti @ 12psi.

I was very surprised, not driven much turbo diesels tbh, its also nice looking car in white, would have no quibbles owning one.

Just get it on the road. I took mine off the road (unintentionally) for 2 months over Xmas. Never again.

The car has ran out of mot and tax and is sorn, there is no issues with the car, i know it will sail through its MOT

I also want to replace the headgasket and cure that oil leak in the corner

Re-route the intercooler pipe work, mount the intercooler back further once the slimline fans are installed and fit the the replacement bumper i've got without chopping the heck out of it!

Also fit the GB downpipe and other stainless bits, and few other bits

At one day per week working on the car, its a slow process and weather dependant as i don't have the luxury of a workspace.

But i'll get there soon

Modern diesels are deceptive! My dad's Fabia VRS always felt really quick to me, and i know that on paper it's nothing that special. I must admit that i havent been out in a properly quick car for a long time now though!

If my coupe feels as strong as the Fabia did when i've done a few mods, then id be chuffed TBH!

Can't believe how many people's cars have been off the road for so long...think my daily drive & commute turbo shed was off the road for no more than a few weeks in near 5 years and that was due to the busted clutch or some other garage needing problem.
Am shi77ing myself now that the new coupe will be one of those cars rover built their reputation on

Have you brought yourself a new coupe then Shen?

I know lots of people have had car's off the road for quite some time now, certainely makes me feel better about mine, although i have that feeling in the back of my mind that it could well deteriorate in some way having been sat so long.

I just havent been arsed to start working on it much yet, and it's difficult sometimes to motivate myself to start sorting out the issues and making the changes that i want to do with it. In fairness i know my coupe will never be a daily driver so im not that worried about needing to get it on the road fast. I also am the sort of person who hates doing jobs bit by bit, and when i think about the car and what i want to do with it, i wouldn't want to start taking bits off it to replace things without doing everything else at the same time.

The main stuff is:
1, Bodywork and undersealing.
2, Full suspension and brake re-build front and rear. Then new wheels and tyres.
3, Engine out to detail the bay, and clean and paint the engine, subframe and all the ancilleries. At the same time i want to change the cam belt, clutch, and have the gearbox uprated/re-built.
4, Engine tuning towards 225-230bhp.
5, Interior mods like the MGF mirror, Decent headunit and speakers and intalling an EBC and turbo timer. I also want to paint the dash strip white, and convert the key only central locking into a fob activated system. Window tinting and a full interior valet to finish off.
6, After all that i want to take it to have it rolling road power tested and then somewhere where i can have the suspension settings along with any adjustable kit i have fitted set up to suit fast road and occasional track day use.

I've got no idea of how much all the above will cost, so im still saving up for now. I also don't have all the tools and equipment to do some jobs like taking the engine out, even my car ramps dont go under the front bumper! I can't and wont be able do all the work myself, so for things like the box re-build and the bodywork i will have done professionally. Still leaves loads to do and loads of cash required to buy all the bits. I don't want to fit any secondhand parts, so i'll have to keep saving for stuff until i can afford decent kit as and when.

Well steve I just got another coupe yes, 80k on the clock and a very honest 80k, in the last 13 years it's done 40k miles, never modified or messed about with (still has bmv on) and I don't think it's been abused.
The body is in excellent condition and the paintwork is very nice indeed, not a spot of rust as the previous owners kept on top of things in that department.
Needs just a few things sorting and it'll be on the road next week hopefully so I can blow the cobwebs out.

I'll post some detailed pics when I can.

I have got a few idea's for mine, but hoping that if i can get at least 2.5k together by the summer, that i can really get into it and start ripping off all the tired 17yr old moving parts and anything that looks scabby or in need of paint or powdercoating etc. Will be nice though just to get the bodywork and interior super mint this year, even if i end up having it engineless by the winter.

I miss my '96 220 turbo too, sadly drive a civic coupe em2 vtec now but wish it had the go from my coupe. Been sorn for about 5 years now, low miles and good cond. She only needs brakes and tyres for the mot, but just don't have the time .....

I think the tax is a winner unless your unfortunate and want a V6 or 4 driver with that stupid hike of a million squid that sits between an ST and a MPS.
The bands are silly and 200 quid for 200-300 bhp is a bargain compared to the tax for say a 1.6 with 1/3rd the power
