I quite fancy building a biodiesel powered 1/4 mile car. Maybe get an engine from one of those american pickup trucks, build a tube-framed car around it and blow the tatas off it. Then run it all on a renewable energy source just to make the point.

If we can get most of the gas-guzzlers in the world using biodiesel then there's more precious petrol left for us spark ignition fiends :o)

Smells of chips aparrently, but that can't be any worse than the rancid smell of diesel fumes!

Good stuff the biodiesel,my father inlaw and i traveled from n.ireland to cromer(about 400 miles) on Â£35 of the stuff...

It might be renewable, but is it sustainable? I mean all these energy people going on about things generally dont know what there talking about.

Yes it may be less harmfull, but do we have enough space / resource to run all the worlds cars/auto's on soya beans and crap?! probably not.

bear in mind the amount of agricultural land lying fallow or crops being grown and wasted to keep prices stable via govt subsidies and the progress being made with diesel performance and economy. given this i think it would be possible to run transport on biodiesel. the problems start when you try to figure out where to get the energy to turn rapeseed into biodiesel that's the real problem. hopefully something like workable geothermal, fusion or orbital beamed solar power will come along when necessary but with 'big oils' stranglehold on the economy don;t hold your breath.

Thought it was illegal? (For the same reason as red diesel. There's no fuel duty paid on it.) Probably wrong like.

Thought the smell of chips or what have you gave you away really easily too.

Before I got the 800 I was running a diesel on waste oil from the local chip shop:) You just filter it then heat it till all the water has evaporated. Only downside is when its cold you have to heat the oil in the 'tank' even when you are not using it since it solidifies a bit! I used a 12V cup warmer, worked a treat:)

I had to stop doing it when I had a visit from some suited chaps who saw some posts on the www. I explained how I obtained the oil for free, they explained, at length, how i couldn't do it. Basically it comes down to hurting the economy...............

I'm currently 'working' on 'aquafuel', won't say more though for fear of more suits!
