Had mine for 4 years.

Some problems: hood wears out where it meets the roof mechanism at the back. Like many other roadsters, the rear window plastic can go brittle and crack (mine did: replaced it for £25 with some bloke who ran up sails for a living.) Body colour wing mirrors have faded.

Other than that, it's been 100% reliable (I might regret writing that), if expensive to service. Better to use a specialist like the MGF Centre in Wolverhamtob.

Electric power steering is very light, but can be disabled by simply removing a fuse. I've done that and it's surprising the difference it makes: you can really chuck the car around, corners like a mad thing.

Also, no sychromesh on reverse, so can graunch if you're not careful.

I've had mine lowered. Metro-based, yes, but it does mean that the car has double-wishbone suspension all-round. Conceptually, it's a bit like those mad twin engined Minis BMC made in the early 60s', only without a front engine. Conceptually, it's a bit like a Miura but with 8 fewer cylinders, or an X/19/Monte Carlo with more poke, and the option of wind in the hair.

Consider the competiton:

BMW Z3: repackaged 1970s 3-series. Odd-looking, gutless in 4-cyl form. The Triumph TR7's closest competitor, and only 20 years late.
Alfa Spider: FWD, a 2-litre Tipo-based roadster with the structural integrity of blancmange.
FIAT Barchetta: two door Punto convertible.
MX-5: the default choice, perhaps, reliable, fun, and a charming alternative to a 1964 Lotus Elan, albeit slower.

Perhaps the best idea is to get an F and budget for an aftermarket warranty, should the HG go.
