What, a week or a day?
If that's a week the difference in cost wont even make up for the cost of changing cars IMO.
Not worth the hassle. And £50 odd year extra for tax is like £1 a week.

that rover 200 mk3 1.1 would do me, but there rare
I expect that's because they are only 600bhp in a 1 ton car, meaning they've got to be stupidly slow.
If you want a 1.1 I recommend a saxo. Lighter small and easy to park. Can be amusing to drive at times. Plus can get over 50mpg.

The 1.1 will only end up doing same mpg wise. Even a diesel will only attain 60miles to the same £5. Trust me here changing car wont help very much unless you can get a car petrol car that can do 65-70mpg.
Even if the 1.1 could attain 45mpg (about max which is likely).
You will only save £4.30 a week on petrol if you did 50miles every day (350miles) even less if you don't attain 350miles a week.
If we look at the Dervs
A 2litre derv circa 50mpg. 350miles a week will only save you £5.83 a week.
If you got a petrol car that could do 70mpg (near impossible). You would save £15 a week.

Nope.
My dad keeps going on about getting 64mpg in his octavia.
However that cost him £7500, and my car (32mpg) cost me £1300. it'll take a while to make up the difference, lol.

I very much doubt he is getting anywhere near 64mpg, however if you drove the same manor as he would need to get this amount you would get lots more than 32mpg!
However if we take your figures it would take your dad 8 years and 6 months to recoup his money, so spout that at him next time

Oh, he does get silly amounts, believe me. That's about the most though, usually gets somewhere between 48 and 60 I think. He doesn't drive slow mind, just 'efficiently'.
When I drove my mums car we compared mpg with driving, I used to get about 43mpg, and he used to get about 50

A guy at my work has a mk4 golf tdi and he quite regularly gets those sort of figures. Even when he puts his foot down he still averages above 50mpg!
Puts my low 20's to shame
weve only got limited info here so im assuming you drive 50 miles round trip to WORK for a fiver a day.. assuming you work 5 days a week (£25 a week on fuel) and finnally assuming you are on the most basic of wages it will only take 1 hour of work per per day to recoup the petrol cost...
Am i missing something? nearly everyone earns at the very least (FT wage) £250 per week.. so only 10% would go on fuel...
TBH, and I know this probably sounds harsh but your best bet is change jobs to something more local and better paid.. HTH

It can be rediculous at times - a serious culture shock in mileage when I moved over here, but I can't help myself - I'm a petrol head through & through! For me I get approx 280 - 300 miles to a tank, I say oh well & just fill her up
