Rover 216 si. Bubble

Has anyone got any information on the rover 216 si bubble, stats etc etc. Unfortunately due to financial circumstances i am being forced to sell my 600 Ti and get something a bit cheaper to run .

Not what i really want to do but it's gotta be done

So i was thinkin that a bubble vi or 216 would be a good bet.

Still need something with a bit of poke as otherwise i would get bored to easily

think of them what you will - but I love my 214 bubble, compliments my driving style well - and produces when I need it too ... its just 'fun' to drive.

The 216 is the best of the bunch in terms of performance vs fuel consumption vs insurance costs.

The 1.6 engine is easily capable of 35mpg. In fact even with my heavy feet i always managed over 32mpg, and people who know me know how i drive

The 1.6 engine is noticeably quicker than the 1.4 and also has better fuel consumption. The gearing was lower on the 200's as apposed to the 25's which means they can become a bit boomy (like all 200's apart from the 1.8 non VVC) at 80/90mph.

Overall the 200's are superb for the money they can now be had for. No other car i can think of can rival a 216 value for money wise.

If you are looking for a 3 door they are a little bit harder to come by as most people bought them in 5 doors.

Make sure you don't go for poverty spec, you want at least leccy windows.

If you can drive the VVC steady you'd also get over 30mpg however insurance is more expensive.

216 is good yes( we have a R25 1.6iL) - but for a budget I dont think you can beat a 214(103bhp model), nippy little motors, lower insurance, lower car tax, lower fuel bills, and I dont think the performace is much less than a 216.

You wont get higher fuel economy on a 1.4, it is actually lower.

The 1.4 is only 1 insurance group lower, it made hardly any difference to my insurance when i changed my 214 for a 216. In fact even changing to a 218 only cost about £80 more than a 214.

Granted road tax will be cheaper but thats only £70 a year.

Overall the 216 drive is far superior. The 1.4 has lack of torque under 3.5k meaning you have to rev it to get anywhere (and thus the reason why fuel economy is not as good).

The 214 is nippy if you thrash it, however the 1.6 is nippy all the time and doesnt require hammering.

The 25iS has longer gear ratios than the 216 so its better on the motorway. The 25 1.6 does not feel as nippy as the 216, however there isnt a great deal between them. 25 attains better fuel economy on motorway.

Agree with everything Gary said. I got one for the Mrs for £1250, on a P plate with 125k on the clock, so not exactly average mileage, and its been great. She absolutely loves it, and even I enjoy driving it. Fuel economy is as good as if not better than her old 1.4 Renault 5. We were thinking about what to replace it with as it looked like it was going to be written off, care of some old guy driving into it, but they've agreed to repair it and she is genuinly pleased, because even though she'd have made an extra £250 on what she paid for it, she was unable to find a car in that price bracket that combined the performance/handling/comfort that she had with the Rover.

They're good cars, just a shame about my tubby

I might be getting a 216 si now as i've been offered a smart 3 door, with 42000 genuine miles, alloys, A1 condition for £1200.
Is this a good price, I'm really gonna miss the performance of the ti but i suppose i could save for another with the cash i'm saving running a 216!

Are there any cheap mods you can do to squeeze a bit more power out of them, apart from the usual like filter and exhaust

I'd snap his hand off mate, i paid more than that for my'n with a few more miles. and i love it. As Gary said, 3 doors are hard to find, i was lucky with my'n. Overall there a great car.

Exhaust and decent filter does seem to be a good mod on the 216's, wouldnt bother with anything else. Should give a 16.8ish 1/4 which isnt at all bad.

my gf bought a n reg 216si with all electrics this weekend actually, its a 3dr and done 70k and she paid £800! it has more than average stonechipping on the front but with FSH and MOT to back up the mileage and recent cambelt it wasnt anything to worry about.

this was just a local private sale

i bought one of these a few weeks ago...was well lucky! got a 3 door with 70K 2 old owners...dont think it was over 40 in its life...........mint was kept in garage at house an polished every week......it looks like its just out of the showroom...seriously!

Over the moon with it....ordered 17's and suspension (40) is being put in next fri.......looking forward to that!

Did i read that last post right from gary that exhaust and filter will bring the 216 up to 130?

16.8 1/4 mile was the same as my standard 218 got. So its going to be in the region of 115bhp-120bhp. (They are 111bhp as std)
