Hm...what´s that smell....ahhh smoke!

Post by Tritium »

Yesterday afternoon at ca 10 o´clock pm is was driving with my GF to the farm where her horse is standing. So it was dark already...
It´s abou 1,5km drive from home, so we only need a few minutes...about 300m before the fram I thought hmm...where´s that burning smell coming from...which idi*t is burning some plastic again?
I drive onto the fram and stop my car and in the moment it came to stop I saw some comeing from under the bonnet and get into the trace of my headlights. And it was now smelling even more. I stoped the engine got out of the car and lifted the bonnet...now a huge cloud of smoke comes out.
I thought OMG the electrics...so I shouted at the GF to fetch the fire extinguisher and I tryed to rip the battery terminals off, but they where too tight, so a jump to the boot, get the 13mm spanner and loosen the screw and ripped it off.

So now I inspected the car in daylight and I think it was the aux-belt :?
The belt is 5000km old, but it locks way older...and the tensioner is really really shiney, so that I believe the tensioner is stuck.

What do you think?

But I´m a little scared about hanging the battery on again... :|

The tensioner on mine looks shiny as well so that may not be your problem...was there any squeeling or belt noise which would likely have been apparent to smoke the belt...could be a sticking alternator or something like that if you think it's coming from that area...if i was you i would start it up again then keep a careful eye on the entire area and try to suss where the smoke is coming from (extinguisher in hand and someone to turn it off). If no result then put on your lights, etc as you had on before and check that there isn't some kind of electrical short somewhere. After that it's just a case of testing everything for free movement, good connections, etc...tho it should be clear though what the problem is as soon as it starts smoking again...

Put the battery back on again and measured the current with an ampmeter.

Maybe someone can comment on this:
Interieur light switched off, all doors closed, ignition off: 0,02a
" , on door opened, ignition off: 0,05a (?)
" , both doors opened, ignition off 0,07a (??)
" , one opened door and ignition full on: 1,58a

There was a short spike when the fuel pump primed but with everything switched off, just ignition full on it´s pretty steady at 1,58a.
Can someone confirm this?

About the picture:
I find the two "stripes" on the belt a bit odd keeping in mind it´s less then 4000km old.
