need a new keyfob
I have the older style infra-red keyfob, does anyone know a way of getting buying and encoding one for my car, without having to spunk well over £100 at the dealer?
Seems a crazy amount to pay.
Had problems last night- its not the batterys, it the buttons that have stopped working properly, and the drivers side lock doesnt undo with the key (i hadnt connected the key mech to the actual lock when i replced the cen locking motor), and the passenger side has key hole, its blanked, and cant get though boot cos its a 420!

I'd also be interested in this... one of mine is broken and I worry that the other will go when I least suspect. Considered getting a Toad alarm for £115 and ditching the rover fob, but the idea of wiring is up scares me

hadnt thought about going aftermarket. wiring does scare me too!
But if dealer wants charge me £150 (i think it was £100 for the fob and £50 for encoding), it might as well pay a bit more and get an aftermarket alarm fitted that will also reduce insurance.
you think it would hardly cost anything for a new keyfob- both hondas and rovers share the same fob designs.

My mrs' one plays up. Take it apart and clean it up and it should help matters. I can't afford the ridiculous prices either.

These can do keyfob programming...
Good link- still seems a crazy rpice to me, but thats way cheaper than dealer.
Got my fob working for now, but its intermittant. Just goto weigh up whetehr its worth paying extra for an aftermarket alarm.
How many percent does an alarm typicalaly knock off insurance?

I'd get that door lock connected up asap Pete
I've just put a Toad on the 214, although I fitted it myself so doesn't count towards insurance as the cert isn't stamped, fob range is far better than the fob on the 800 too
Keep the orig fob for times when battery has to be disconnected should be ok if it still works intermittantly, get a Toad on it jobs a goodun

If yours is the older type IR fob you CANT get a new fob and have it programmed at rover. You may however get a generic two button fob that learns IR codes, but you need the orignal WORKING fob to supply the IR signal.
The fob is programmed to the reciever in the interior light unit on 200's. You may be lucky and geta replacement preprogrammed fob from rover using the serial sticker on the PCB of the fob. But i dont think this is possible, instead you need to get in the car and take reciever to rover for them to order your specific fob for your unique reciever (ferquiencies etc are on the info sticker on the reciever).
You can deactivate the alarm using the key in the door lock its a microswitch on the lock this can be tempermental but does usually work. then you got the problem of getting in the car.......like rob said fix lock asap and never ever ever delock your car, a friend has and he has to climb through boot when his battery goes flat.
What i did was to find a new fob and matching reciever from a scrappy i was very lucky. if the light unit is the wrong colour it does not matter the pcb can be swapped into yours
this is cheapest option.
The older cars do not have key access codes either.
I would gently tap your fob on something hrd lightly to see if that helps tempt it to work again or take battery out and clean the contacts this will hopefully buy you some time but ultimatly you need a new fob........
A different alarm would work but there is no way of bypassing the original i.e if the battery goes flat when you reconnect it/charge the rover alarm will reactivate and need deactivating before you can drive the car! Just like Rob states.
