Which rover sounds the best???

High pitched k series scream?

KV6 smooth as silk purr???

T series induction note and dump valve?

or the mighty rover V8 rumble??

I am really curious about this one, all the rovers i have driven/been drivin in have been k series engined! Anyone else love the noise that just starts at about 3500rpm???

Driven a K and a T the K wins hands down for the shear roar!

Having said that the DV sounds cool aswell on my T mmmmmmmmm

Will contemplate before voting.

Well I can say if vtec was down there it'd be jonny's :) however I think my silencer gives a gorgeous roar on full throttle - love it to bits, and gets my vote.

There is no contest here.

Anyone who has driven/been passenger in or stood next to the mighty V8 will have ended up wiping the drool from there chin.

I've had the great pleasure of thrashing a Landrover V8 around the Kalahari Desert in Botswana (It was absolute heaven!!) Remember the time on Topgear when Richard Hammond proclaimed "I am a Driving GOD!!" well i know exactly how he felt. :D

well i love the throaty burble that my Ti has with the induction kit....

...but i think the V8 wins hands down.

Remember the first time I heard a mightly V8 SD1 years ago and I don't think I have ever heard any Rover sound better.

Mind you I love the sound of Jonny's vtec - but that's not a Rover engine :(

V8! no if's but's or maybe's!! :D Comes with a sublime burble as standard, but play with the exhaust and it's like something else! Having owned a few Rover V8s as well as big Yank V8's no way can a four pot compete on the noise front! Go listen to a TVR at full pelt, makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up!!! :D :D :D :D

HAS to be the Rover V8. Makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up when hearing one at revs, so sweet and smooth *in* the vehicle, yet they sound so lovely and rorty and lumpy due to the odd firing impulses.

After a week of flat out work converting my dads Series III landy to Rover V8 EFi - with Chrysler 3spd auto and 230 transfer box, it was a welcome noise to hear when it fired up. Had a lot of trouble with the EFi relays - spent a couple of days tracing problems, but when it first fired up and kept running and a steady idle it made it all worthwhile.

The sheer laziness of driving a V8 - even in a landy - just makes it *the* best :) Always like the torque reaction that threw a 1.7 ton landy around when you whacked the throttle open - and the intake noise through the air flow meter with a K&N is divine..

I'd agree on a tuned A series though - very sweet little motor at revs, with it's odd 3 port exhaust creating a wierd noise signature..

Aye, a big-bore A series with a wild cam and a single-box RC40 exhaust... 8) Luvly!

Yep, and when I heard it at Castle Combe earlier in the year... awesome sound 8)

Oh - and don't forget that ride you promised me

V8 for me too ... by a long way. Anyone here see the V8s win the BTCC back in 82? Impressive tools...

Modern (mostly)stuff:

here's my line up:

1st = V8 (that's modern ?....:)
2nd= KV6 ... v. naaaice!
3rd= T series ( like the induction noise at large throttle openings until turbo takes over fully.
4th = O, S, A and K series equally
5th = B series ... Early MGB - had an almost Ferrari like mellow note at around 4000 rpm ... superb (If I still had one of these, I'd probably put it No. 1 !

The above is from the driver's view(ear?) point. As a bystander hearing a passing car .... V8 and early B joint first. Modern stuff in standard trim a bit too suppressed soundwise both exhaust and induction.

Oh yes ... nearly forgot. The MGC Straight six was a nice engine both inside and out of the car.

my vote went to the real engine (v8) but i love the sound my vvc coupe makes. its just a standard exhaust with a 3" trim at the mo but once its warm it sounds the nuts. a nice rasp/bark but not like a nova.

Ever since i heard a moddified S1 escort turbo ive loved the format.

the T16's are even better because of the longer gearing and bigger torque, its not a particualry special sound its just way the turbo smooths out the unbalanced noise of the straight 4 and the effortless pull of long gears.
they sound quick without trying to be noisy.

I would of probably said the KV6 but ive never heard one!

T16 turbo when the exhaust has a straight through system with no baffles.

Followed by the V8

I loved the sound of my K when i had the back box put on it, i only wish it had MORE power. It was a funky little engine :D

I've got the same back box as Bjorn, and as he said, there's a definate roar full throttle at the higher revs. I'm happy it makes the car sound nice. T series is nice and deep at idle.

In my last mini i had an RC40 exhaust :D but only had a mild cam in that took me and dad 2 days to fit  . For what it was, it was poky and makes the typical whining sound when pulling away :D

KV6 has the nicest sound through a meaty exhaust , but the winner by far has to be the V8. Just sounds like pure power :)

I know it's not strictly a Rover engine - but as Jonny's car was mentioned, I thought I might forward another candidate: The Honda C series V6 - as fitted to the 800 and Legend.

Not as "raspy" as the KV6, but it has a lovely deep, quite mellow, relaxed sound at low revs, getting typically Honda frenetic sounding at high revs. Very good throttle response due to the far superior PGM-Fi engine management too :)

ohhhhhh,

nice response ppl, i think the v8 wins hands down then.

can you fit one to a mk 2 200???

There's a few clubman mini's with V8's sitting on top of 'landcrab' gearboxes - yes that means transverse, so given a huge amount of time and effort you could conceivably fit one to a 200 :P

Hard with the low bonnet of a 200 though - at least with a Mini you've got the benefit of it originally having a Transmission In Sump motor, hence a high scuttle..

if i were going to go to that trouble i would longlitudinally mount it, with rear wheel drive, wouldn't fancy a fwd v8, my 214 torque steers too much as it is

If i had the time or the money it would be an excellent project. perhaps when my career kicks off

So you wouldn't fancy a Lancia Thema 8.32, comes with Ferrari V8 driving a rather terrified pair of front wheels!!

There's a pair of mint SD1's that patrol Preston every so often, that wins hands down for me, second would be the T series, as demonstrated to me by Neill once. :p

After having been round a couple of the local race circuits in a Ferarri BB512, absolutely NOTHING can compare with the sound that the flat 12 makes - especially when it is just behind your head :D

I like the noise my VVC makes.

Like a million mile diesel on tickover and a screamer over 4000rpm.

Do like the T Dump though.

Weird choice for No.3 but then i think it sounds better than most diesels under load, nice and grunty. :)

My vote (of the ones that are there) goes for the V8.
But an S-series with twin webers and a decent bore exhaust (not too big) sounds decent.
Of the Honda units, a 12 valve with K&N and 2 box 2" exhaust sounds much sweeter than any of the 16v units.

No contest surely? Even since I met the mighty Rover V8, I have always incisted that it is one of the best british engines (I know its not 100% british!) ever made.

Just roll on getting and Rangie :D

Yeah, I do think it sounds pretty good alright. You can hear it quite well in the in-car video of mine you can download here:
http://www.rt2468abcd.r8technology.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=6727

I'm not going to vote on this though as I can't really say I have heard any of the other engines, at least not lately anyway. I'm surprised to read that many people are saying the K sounds better than the T. Can't wait to decide for myself!
