What the deal with buying car tax on-line.

Post by Ti-Andy »

If i purchase car tax on-line. It say's I may not get my tax disc for up to 5 working days.

So my car would not be displaying a valid tax disc.

What happens if i get a ticket for not displaying a valid task disk?

The online data base will have checked for m.o.t & insurance prior to the purchase of the tax disk.

Am i right in thinking that i'll "cop" the fine/points for not displaying a disk that is on-route?

It's a damned shame that the HORt 1 procedure doesn't apply to the tax disk :(

Or better still,, get rid of the thing altogether and put the tax on fuel instead.

Then EVERYBODY pays, not just those of us who care about our cars.

Even catches the pikeys as well, and that's gotta be worthwhile ;)

 DAM! and blast bank holiday's

I'll have to wait until morning to go to the post office!

I now need beer for two reasons!

1. to celebrate getting the car through the m.o.t (with a lot of help... thanks to the relavent parties)

2. to console myself and ensure that i'm not tempted to go for a run out in her this evening.

ho hum!

Do you not have a sub post office near you? Our newsagent at the top of my road has a sub post office with an "out of hours" counter. So you can tax your car when the post office is closed, as long as the newsagent is open (obviously!).

:o How useful is THAT?? :-

"Now it is such a bizarrely improbable coincidence that anything so mindbogglingly useful could evolve by chance that some thinkers have chosen to see it as a final clinching proof of the non existence of God"

Seriously though Craig - I wish there was something like that round here - it'd be a lifesaver

According to the website, you can tax your car at any of these within the Wakefield area. One might have an out of hours counter ...

Or you could just wait until tomorrow. :D

You just know that they would do this, and then introduce an additional tax to replace the roadtax. :(

Not unless they wanted mass rebellion on their hands

Think of the Poll tax riots and then multply it by 1000

Besides which - if road tax was collected by putting it on petrol, the excequer would make a shed load more money than they do now.

Any idea how many untaxed vehicles there are running round on UK roads?

The price of petrol is perilously close to £1/l a it is now! If the £ numbers start going up faster than the litres I'll start crying

Seriously, I went to fill the vit up a couple of days ago, had to stop at £50!

Assuming a tax increase to cover road tax of 4p per litre

and assuming road tax at present to be £165 (which, of course, is going up, AGAIN).

You'd be better off paying at the pumps until you'd bought 907 gallons per year.

Not even my Ti uses THAT much ;)

I personally use approx 20 gallons per month on average so, overall, I don't even use 250 gallons per year.

My Vitesse swallowed £45 worth of Sainsbury's super unleaded stuff on Thursday evening. The gauge wasn't even into the red when I went to fill up. :o

Mind you, I've done 100 (mainly motorway) miles and it has used just less than 1/4 tank. At least, that's what the gauge says. :D

Don't be! There was a good reason for it and besides, it was nice doing that run in the Vitesse. It was also probably exactly what the car needed, having not been driven much for a little while.

I worked this out in my head last night - I spend £45 a week on petrol (which is a bit above average) and that gets me about 50l . To cover road tax at £175/year they'd have to put fuel duty up 7p/l. For the average person, probably more like 10p.

No way Jose :o

When this was suggested recently, the figure given was 4p per litre

Because ALL the pikeys will have to pay, the burden of tax "should" be eased from the law abiding

I didn't realise there were official suggested figures :) Still that 4p would make regular unleaded hit the magic £1/l round here!

Hmmmmm

Knowing this administration as we all do, I can't see a change taking place which would be either cost saving or cost neutral to the long suffering, tax paying motorist.

Silly me - how naive :x

we need to face facts, we drive cars the current adminstration sees us as an easy target and a cash cow. even given a new, motorist friendly, administration change won't happen overnight. we should start to lobby mp's councillors etc, as soon as they realise that they are going to lose votes they will listen to us. thats why the govt harps on about off roaders, etc. they want to keep motorists divided so that we don't all act together. and what's with the VAT on petrol? hardly a luxury item in this day and age is it now. thats it i'm getting down off my high horse cos i'm giddy.

The Domino Effect

If you add the tax to fuel, then that means all the lorry drivers will have to pay extra for their diesel... which means their prices will all go up... which means everything you buy will increase in price... so not only will you be paying more for your fuel, your supermarket bill will go up each month... all these price increases will cause inflation to rise... so the government will raise interest rates in a bid to control it... some businesses will go bust... mortgages will be higher, so more house repossessions... pay demands will increase due to higher inflation, more firms will move their operations abroad... more people out of work, so welfare costs will increase...

etc. etc. etc....

so you can see why the Government dare not introduce it!

No - not if it's revenue neutral - which is should be.

Extra fuel on DERV should be compensated for by zero road fund licence.

I believe its a much fairer system, if you own more than one car you cant drive more than one of them at any one time, but you have to tax them all. Also since officially speaking the tax is for the maintenance of the highways (HA) then those that do more miles, and cause more wear on the roads would pay more. I guess problems might occur when people buy fuel for other vehicles that dont run on the roads, or lawn mowers etc, but im sure some arrangement could be reached.

Would save the government a fortune in hunting down, prosecuting, and implementing the current paper system.
