Fuel gauge and filling tank

Post by LondonMX »

1) When the Fuel Gauge drops into the red how much fuel is left in the tank? Also when it drops to the halfway point how much is left in the tank? (my car is J reg 216gsi auto.)

2) How do you fill the tank without the pump going haywire I have tried the pump at differing angles with it halfway inserted. What is the correct way of doing it so that the pump only shuts off when the tank is full? Thanks.

NB mines a NON cat by the way...

i find that if you hold the nossle upside down and to the left slightly it works perfectly everytime.

i used to hate this on my car but it seems its a common problem.

You think thats bad, you should of driven my Honda, I had to put the nozzle in as normal, then spin it right the way round so its upside down, then push it in again just so it would spill any fuel anywhere!
I drive a 1994 Rover 620 Ti, and my little toy, a Mk3 Honda CRX Vtec which is dead at the moment!

All cars are different.

On my 214, when the needle went to the bottom of the red, I found I got about 50 miles.

In the 220, I get about 100 miles :o

Every rover i've hads been the same mate. Some pumps are worse than others for some reason. Once it took me about 15mins just to put a fiver in as soon as i pulled the trigger its just kept clicking

Fill up your car, and reset the trip meter. Drive as per normal, make a note how many miles you've covered when it hits halfway. Later when it goes in the red, go and fill up. See how many litres it takes. Look in your car's manual to find out how big the tank is, then you know how many litres you have used, and how many you had left.

Divide the total miles by the total litres used to get the miles per litre.

As you will know how many miles you'd covered at the halfway mark, you can now work out how many litres you'd used at that point, and how many are left.

Oh, and to convert miles per litre to miles per gallon, multiply by 4.5461.

Filled up today. there is a notch cut out on the left hand side of the fuel filler hole. and on the unleaded petrol pump is a notch on the side all u do is line these two up exactly and you can fill the car up full pelt!!!!!!

I'm going to have to try that. If you're right then you may have stumbled across the secret to an age-old rover problem...

The 800 filler just has two little cutouts 180 degrees apart where the cap engages.

As Paul for the Bubble, for the Wedge I found turning it 90 degrees solves the problem. :)

That's what I do. Some pumps just work better than others though (old ones seem to be the worst).
