But not a 420/220 GSiT or GTiT as we will hunt you down and bludgeon you to death with rusty drawer runners.

It's ok guys I know where he lives if he does!

Jules, Ideal one here

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Rover-800-Vitesse ... dZViewItem

then just need to find a scabby 2/420 nasp for the non turbo bits. OK it means 2 donors but a) not easy to find a 2/420 turbo donor b) nasps 2 a penny and can be picked up for peanuts c) you're not making a rare car even rarer and everyone is happy and that lot above dont pop round for a chat to see how things are progressing!

People probably wont mind if you kill a 220 coupe T mind, and tbh I bet a lot of the older GTis are rusted to hell anyway, rather part of them lives on than the whole lot gets crushed....

Is your car rusty Alex? I mean it's around same age as a 220 GTi turbo :P

Julian,

If you fancy working in somewhat awkward conditions and can get it out yourself (with my help of course) I'll have a healthy 100,000 mile T16 turbo engine going spare soon for a sensible price.

I may need the turbo and g/box though - see my "Tell me I'm stupid" post. I might also swap out the inlet manifold as it's branded "Turbo" rather than "Injection"...yes I know they are otherwise identical but these things matter!!! Oh, and will probably swap the dizzy and HT leads over to my wife's 420 tourer as her's are old.

Not making it sound very appealing am I..?

And as the final act of dissuasion, the car is one of those Vit Sports with the "stepper motor whirrs for a minute on shut down" ECU's...never otherwise been a problem though.

Mine's an M - pretty sure they stopped GTis on a K to make way for the GSi?

There's a couple of little spots of rust coming through (nothing major mind) but I could imagine that a lot of cars 2 yrs or so older could easily have a fair bit of rust.

L reg, as there was an L GTi on ebay last week, and mine is an L GSi.

93/94 K/L GTiT
94/95 L/M/N GSiT

Got one or two little lumps on the front arches (one was there when I bought it) and a little on the bootlid. That's it. :P

oops, i best not let on that i broke a 420 gsi turbo to do a turbo conversion on a 25, in my defence i wold like to add that the car had been vandalised and would have cost a lot more to put it right,

nathan,

P.S. please dnt lynch me or attack me with sharp rusty things

okay,

think I will be doing a conversion soon, so i have a couple of questions that need answering
1. has anyone done the electric schematics for the wiring ie mating the 200 1.4 system to the turbo loom.

2. Does it make any difference as to which engine you use, ie wasted spark or dizzy????

3. Earlier on in the thread it was mentioned that I would need parts from a 220 nasp, is this the case or are all the parts that you need already fitted to the 220 turbo.

4. I hazzard a guess springs would be from the 220 turbo, are they direct fitment.

5. Does the fuel pump need changing on the 1.4 to suit the turbo needs.

6. Bar midifications to the exhaust is there any other welding required in the transplant of the turbo engine.

these are the first things that spring to mind so any other further advise is mostly appreciated.

thanks

Sticky in electrics section details all you'll need to know :)
2. Does it make any difference as to which engine you use, ie wasted spark or dizzy????
No, just need the correct loom,

3. Earlier on in the thread it was mentioned that I would need parts from a 220 nasp, is this the case or are all the parts that you need already fitted to the 220 turbo.
All will be on a 2/420 turbo, however if you use an engine from a 6/800 then advantageous to have a 2/420 nasp to hand for bits you'll need to swap.
4. I hazzard a guess springs would be from the 220 turbo, are they direct fitment.
Mk2 suspension differs at the rear from mk3s so no, you'll need mk3 kit.
5. Does the fuel pump need changing on the 1.4 to suit the turbo needs.
The std pump should cope
6. Bar midifications to the exhaust is there any other welding required in the transplant of the turbo engine.
No welding is required if you use the 2.0 subframes

these are the first things that spring to mind so any other further advise is mostly appreciated.

thanks
julian
Bar the wiring it's pretty much just a bolt in swap, and you should have no bother with it whatsoever! :D

well thanks for that that helps me a lot, last question, yes I can see its easier to use the 220 turbo for the conversion but what do you do about the gear box. I have a 620 ti gearbox sumwere at home that just needs bearings but its hydrolic but if memory serves me rite, is not the 220 turbo box a cable operated version, just carnt remeber.

daft thing I carnt remeber what the project car is now hydrolic or manual will check tonite, did they do a hydrolic clutch on the later mk3 bubble 1.4 k series or was it manual.

Simple enough to swap from hydraulic to cable, just a case of undoing a couple of bolts and swapping release arm over. 2 min job with box off :D

If your car is a 1.4 then you will need to weld the 220 cambelt engine mount on to the chasis leg. The other engine mounts are on the 220 subframes. :)

the 1.4's need to be welded, the 1.6's and the 1.8's dont.

arh, so you do have to weld one of the mounts then, so assuming then that all you do is unpick the welds from the donar car and weld the mount into the 1.4 leg. if that is the case then what about the gear box end
