Reprogramming Rover Remotes

Post by malcolm_durant »

Is this a rip-off (yes I know it's a quid for an e-mail) or will it work?

Cheers!

you need a computer to log into the ecu and tell it to learn new fobs? well, on the 620 radio version anyways, but id expect the same from a radio fobbed 820...

most likely the email will contain the re-sync procedure from the owners hand book. it would work only on existing fobs, eg after a battery change.

any new fobs would need programming with the proper equipment.

it would be nice if there was an easy way to program new fobs but i guess it would be common knowledge by now...

I changed the batteries on my existing key fobs (which I hadn't used for about a year or so) and, using the handy tips in a previous posting on this forum, managed to get it working without any probs. The posting advised to keep pressing the lock/unlock alternatively a few times and the ecu re-syncs automatically with fob. (thanks to dreaddan).

I was quoted some rip off price from Rover main dealer to 'fix' the flat battery in the fob and I was reluctant to pay £120 for them to do that so I did it myself.

I suspect that the program that is being sold on ebay is something that you would need to program a 'new' fob as this would need to learn how to talk to your ECU.... I would imagine that existing fobs to existing ecu would not lose that initial 'handshake'.

Thanks guys!

Annoyingly my only fob doesn't seem to work at all (no LED action anyway) and I was thinking more in terms of patching a good fob from another source into my car.

For what it's worth, there's a new independent Rover servicing specialist opened in Eastbourne (Sterling Motors) who my wife had change her CV gaitor the day before she drove to Holland for Xmas.

They have quoted me 0.3 hour's labour (at £40 an hour) to program a new fob. They also quoted new fobs as being something like £50 + VAT each.

They say a s/hand one will be about the same but strongly suggested that it was risky as they often refuse to reprogramme (?).

Those prices can probably be beaten though as they are one of those places that majors on customer service ("Would you like a doughnut with your coffee whilst you wait in our rather comfy and well furnished reception area, Sir?").

Cheers,

Malcolm

Most dealerships charge well over £100 for a new fob + programming. So £50 for the fob plus a tenner in labour sounds alright.
