Degreaser

Post by Jase 220 »

Going to go into town and buy some degreaser, but i'll probably just buy the same stuff i always do and thought it would be interesting to see what products everyone recommends first.

Has to be something thats safe to brush over painted sufaces aswell as engine components without taking shine or even laquer off :o

So what do you guys think?

Same for me. Neat paraffin is also good for grease and traffic film.

I have normally used gunk but thought there could be somthing better out now.

I bought some today, tbh it was the best in the shop but it look promising.

Swarfega oil and grease remover, 2lt for £6.99. but they recommend you dilute 1 part to 50 parts water or use neat for bad contaminated areas so it should last a damn long time :P
I'll probably dilute midway i reakon.

Hell,

I like the smell of gunk, tried to get the wife to dab some on......!

Slightly different tact, although not good for paintwork, but GREAT for heavily oil / grease contaminated stuff is nitromors paint stripper, i use wicks own, paint it on, leave for a minute, wash off, clean as clean can be!

meguiars super degreaser

about 15 quid for a gallon, it dilutes 5:1 water to degreaser for strong degreasing properties, or 10:1 water to degreaser for paintwork. Very safe and being megs you know its good.

Yes, after years of using Jizer, Gunk and other degreasants. I got some of this 'dilute' Swarfega from Halfords back in the summer.... 6.99 .

I dilute it 3 or 4 parts water to 1 of Swarfega and apply it in a cheap plastic 'mist sprayer' you can get from garden Centres etc for a couple of quid.

It is very effective and I'll continue to use it from now on.

Using the mist sprayer (adjustable nozzle jet for mist through to single jet ) you can accurately apply the degreasant and using a tired old washing up brush (30p new) work it into stubborn areas of crud ... hose off and usually components come up like new ... nice to work on a spotless engine or gearbox.... Once an engine is cleaned off well, it's easier to keep that way with the occasional spray and hose off. Great to do just before doing work on the car.

Might try some of that ~ similar price to Swarfega.

Nothing wrong with good old fairy if you're stuck - has some pretty decent degreasing properties.

I was cleaning my mountain bike gear cassette earlier - used a toothbrush and wd40, then 'rinsed' off with some carb cleaner. that does the trick :)

I have tried the swarfega degreaser i bought now and i think its great stuff. I found their recommended diluted mixture to weak for working in the engine bay so i've now been mixing 10 parts water to 1 part solution and i think i'll stick with that mix now , has been very affective at that strength.
