Tuning a 400 diesel

Post by 200coupe »

I still havent decided what motor to replace the vitty with.

Ive read a few reviews about the 400 diesel, t16 turbo amounts of tourque sound good to me as well as at 40 mpg.

Now ive had a read about the rover ron tuning box, but to be honest like most of us im a tight arse and £450 is too much for me.
How much do they go for second hand?

What sort of gains can be had for a reasonable amout of money?

Im still considering a primera gt, vectra sri or a vectra supertouring as i dont realy have the buget for a zs

Surely this thread would be better placed in the correct section? Most of the questions you have asked are already answered there.

Also, where did you get that price information from? :o

*** Edit ***

I don't think Ron will mind me linking to the relevant page:

Ah point taken! I think it must have been some other tweaking box then, my mistake!

Fair enough, guilty of not using the search function to find the answers!

For around £100 you can mod a 200/400/600 L series diesel from around 100 bhp to around 130bhp. Not a bad return on your cash. It'll still be economical and more drivable to boot.

Yeah that isnt bad, how big is the std intercooler? has some one tried using one off a vitty in a front mounted position?

Standard intercooler is pretty much the same size as the one you'll find on a Vitty. Good results have been had by fitting a larger front mount cooler though, the L-series seems to respond very well to a drop in intake temps. :)

I think a ZT CDTi whould be a more appropriate replacement for the Vitty!

I wouldent mind a zt, but i unfortunatly dont have the buget for one :(

People say to me ooh you could do with a people carrier.
No chance! i hate em, look shite and i bet there just like a van to drive!

So if i got a 400 diesel, got the rover ron box so i could get it to 130 bhp in real world performance would it be faster than say a honda engined coupe?

I ask to sort of gauge what the performance would be like, id be happy to go back to d16 level of performance (i know a derv isnt as rev happy but i am used to driving a turbo now,im used to not having to rev the nuts off an engine to get some performance! lol)

Ermm the performance would feel very different. It'd be a much easier car to drive, i.e. not as much cog swapping. I don't think it would be as fast as a honda engined coupe as it'll be heavier. I guess you'll have to blag a ride/test drive in one to see if you like it.

I think your right, didnt mind the more frequent changes as that honda engine just loves to be taken up into the higher revs!

Mind you i could cope with 36mpg, i could get that out of both my 216 hatch back and the coupe.

Its been said you can get that mpg out of a primera gt, not bad for a 150 bhp 2.0 ltr engine.

With the diesel though you are looking at 45mpg and more on a run. Driving gently you can get 55mpg. When I thrash my 600 everywhere I never get below 42mpg.
