First off Ive used 97 a few times in my Ti and noticed a slight increase in performance and economy, but was always unsure as to whether I could justify using it all the time so i stuck with standard 95, however I put some 98 RON in it the other day as it was cheap, and the difference has definatly been noticeable!!!

gonna keep my eyes peeled for some of this 99 at Morrissons now!

just thought I'd share my Ti joy. Plus i only installed the boost controller a couple of weeks ago, with it set at 11.5 psi. Im still amazed at the transformation. as is my bro when he follows in his Leon Cupra! mwahahaha

get mixed reviews about high octane fuel in T16's...

mine ran logger on 100 ron (optimax i think???) and much better on 95 ron lol

Mine definitely runs better on 97 or higher than it does on 95. My local Sainsburys sells it for 97.9 compared to 94.9 for the 95, so its worth using. I don't use it if all i can find is 7 or 8p a litre more like it usually is.

Tesco Super

mine likes Texaco 95 RON from a specific service station, anything else has to be 97 RON for some reason.

I'm not sure if it is down to the petrol station being very busy so petrol is "fresher"

In the ATR I have to use high octane stuff as that's what it's mapped for.. it's supposed to be 98 however I can get away with 97.

So far I've had the following experiences

Shell Vpower (99) - Expensive, but runs perfectly every time
Tesco 99 - Cheap, sounds awful, slower
Esso 99 - Only used once to top up, seemed to be ok
Sainsburys Super (97) - Cheap, usually runs just like on vpower, occasionally doesn't run as smooth. I think it depends on the batch quality and the station I get it from.

The coupe used to run exactly the same on any fuel, 95 or whatever, but that wasn't mapped for it. It's only with the ATR that I feel the difference in the fuel, but tbh I dont think it's the octane rating as 97 is usually fine, it's more to do with the quality of the fuel as different batches seem to be different qualities. Shell definately is good, but like I say, it's about 4p/ltr more than the rivals so for commuting I usually get Sainsbury's stuff.

Having a Shell garage 2 minutes from my house, I tend to put Shell Unleaded in whenever it needs filling up.

If I'm feeling particularly flush or have got a long journey ahead I'll whack a tank of V-Power in. The car doesn't seem to run any better, but I like sticking a tank in every now and then for its cleaning properties.

As mine is mapped for 99RON, I don't really want to use anything less.

I've used Shell's stuff in a Metro before, it didn't like it at all So I tend to stick with BP and Sainsburys (since I work in one of thier garages and know it's all untainted BP stuff)
BP Ultimate is great, They're not lying when they say you get 25 extra miles for a 50 ltr tank, but it's difficult to justify spending the amount they charge.
For some reason 97 my garage sells is completely awful, as I get less milage and no difference in performace compared to 95.

I never used to notice any difference between regular and super, just bought it either on payday or if I was feeling posh lol That said I filled up with super last time and I was doing a better fuel economy until I went for a little rag an hour ago I suppose the only justification I have for filling mine up with super is for the cleaning properties, but this supposedly only happens properly if you use it for a month I was told, but thats probs the petrol companies trying to milk drivers wallets.

Having worked at BP and Sainsburys petrol stations before I seem to have some strange loyalty to them, even though they were crap employers But they seem to do the cheaper supers and I can get more nectar points

Never noticed any performance difference at all frome one fuel to another, though have rarely ever put anything but OPtimax and then V-Power in, I use that for safety more than anything else, it wouldn't go any slower on 95 ron but theres more chance it might suffer from det.

Cheap supers are likely to have less energy than good quality 95RON. So if you can't take advantage of the higher octane rating then you'll probably go slower if anything!

Best way to get some octane boost is to pour a bit of ethanol in your tank Should be able to run 95% petrol 5% ethanol from what i've read and it acts as an octane, plus makes the worlds remaining oil last a bit longer.

although, the 420sli i did notice an improvement with high octane petrol. Most noteably on the way back from TOTB last year, put something in at a texaco garage that was about 1.05 per litre. Dont know what it was, but on the way back the car was flying lol.

Shell V power all the time. Wouldnt say I notice the difference but I drive at high rpm and hard with high boost as much as possible. So if his ron will decrease the chance of pre det its got my money!

Used it in the fortwo as well as that was running well over the recommended boost level.

However if I was to have a non turbo'd engine, then I simply wouldnt bother.l

A standard T16 turbo won't det on any 95RON. Rover will have put a generous safety safety into the ECU map.

BP ultimate is really poor.. not just imo but my brother and friends all agree it's shabba.

On V power or excelium i do notice a distint difference to cheap stuff and get usually around 30 or so extra miles to a tank...of course offset by the price its hardly free miles

V-power (nearly) all the time in the ITR, like with Sheaf's ATR, its what the car is mapped for. i say nearly cos my nearest Shell station is about 10 miles away and i was running on the light Sunday so its got Ultimate in at the mo. its crap, the car sounds and feels rough, dosnt pull as well and the economy sucks. tried Tesco super once, never again.

Anyone tried that BP Ultimate 102RON stuff yet? I'm still saving up, FFS!

Is there actually a good reason for these fuels to be so much more than 95RON, or is it just a way to make money, as usual.

The rover map was generous but then we all go and up the boost making things hot and ideal for pre det toasty stuff.

Also a special shout out to me, in a weekend and two evenings (mon - tuesday) done another engine swap and it started - yey to me!

My t16s have always run best on Shell 95. Also get the best economy (280+ miles) to 40litres mixed driving , k7 box, from 95, i get around 20-30miles less with V-max for some reason.
