'93 Rover 420 GSi Sport Turbo - SOLD

Post by agw_01 »

Never thought I'd be doing this but with an ever growing family and greater responsibilities in my career comes less time for keeping old cars on the road, especially when it's my main mode of transport.

For sale is my genuine L reg Rover 420 GSi Turbo.

132,000 miles on the body, engine is of unknown history but has been in the car since 91,000 miles. Anyone that knows me will know I am utterly meticulous about warm up/cool down procedures and oil services. The car has wanted for nothing, genuine parts always used where available. I've owned the car since 2009, with 7 previous keepers. Oil services every 6,000 miles using decent quality Fusch/Mobil oil and genuine L series filters. The timing belt and tensioner were replaced when the engine was fitted to the car. The headgasket was replaced and gearbox steel caged at 94000 miles. A new genuine coil was fitted at 105,000 miles.

MOT until July 2015.

The car has an intermittent ABS fault caused by the rear drivers sensor. Several spare sensors are included to cure the issue. As the fault is intermittent, it hasn't caused any major problems to warrant me replacing the sensor previously.

Spec is as follows;

Engine
2.0 Litre 16v T-Series Turbo
Klinger Head Gasket
NGK spark plugs
Pulsar GTi-R T28 Turbo w/ 360º bearing
GBE Stainless 2.5" Downpipe
Mongoose 2.5" cat-back system with de-cat pipe
Forge actuator w/ 10psi spring
Steel caged gearbox with Type B LSD
Polybushed gear linkage
Cone air filter w/ heatshield
RadTec Alloy Radiator
Blue Samco coolant hose kit
Blue SFS coolant matrix kit
Alloy lower coolant rail
Stainless steel upper coolant rail
Stainless steel expansion coolant rail

Brakes and Suspension
H&R Lowering Springs on Koni Adjustable (Yellow) shocks
282mm MG ZS 180 front brakes
260mm MG ZS 180 rear brakes
Polybushed front lower wishbones w/ new balljoints
Polybushed rear ARB droplinks
Polybushed tie-bar mounts
Polybushed rear camber arms
Polybushed rear anti-roll bar
Polybushed front/rear engine stabilisers
Front OMP strut brace
Rear upper cabletech strut brace

Interior
Leather-top Centre Armrest
Prosport boost, volts, oil pressure gauges
LED interior lighting
Momo 'Race' wheel
Short shift with Momo leather 'MG TF Anniversary' gear knob
'Recaro' 820 Vitesse front seats
Infinity 6.5" co-axial speakers w/ MDF rings and dynamat in front doors
Toad CAT1 alarm/immob

Exterior
Smoked Side Repeaters
Modified Espace splitter
Citroen Xsara washer jets
Black 17" OZ Ultraleggera wheels wrapped in Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres
Front and rear mudguards
Painted red calipers
LED front side lights
LED rear numberplate lights
LED reverse lights

While the mechanicals are good, the bodywork does need attention. The roof has been 'plastidipped' black which could do with another couple of layers for an even finish and the car does need attention at the rear arches/sills... cutting out and replacing. The passenger front door is slightly dented and scratched and the rear drivers door is showing signs of lacquer peel. The car is certainly presentable however and the car was machine polished in 2010 which restored its colour tremendously.

The car will come with the following spares/upgraded parts ready to fit (some of which were taken from my old green 420 Turbo and haven't been fitted yet);

Window regulators and switch packs to convert rear windows to electric
Set of rear (door) window glass
Set of rear mudflaps
Single piece speedo cable and metal speedo drive
Headlights and hockey sticks
Set of outer cambelt covers
Rear abs sensors
Spare dizzy cap mounting assembly (plastic/metal plates) - hard to find
2 pairs of side spats (red/green pairs)
Various dash trim/switches
Various spare interior trim/panels
Spare scuttle panel
Spare MEMS 550 ecu
Refurbished fuel filler neck
Polybushed trailing arms with zs180 carriers/discs/pads (calipers fitted but require servicing)
Polybushed rear lower shock arms
Front ARB polybushes
Oil catch tank
Magnecor red HT leads (1 damaged)
Suspension turret rubber boots (rare)
FMIC with alloy 2.5" pipework
Box of alloy 2.25" pipework
Power/earth 0 gauge wiring for battery to boot inc fuse holder
NASP power steering cooler - Allows FMIC to be fitted without damage from standard cooler
Additional clocks with white lockwood dials (142,000 miles)
Motobuild suspension - Koni Yellows/Koni Reds (fronts will require a service) and a choice of Motobuild springs or unknown very low front springs
Brand new unused drivers side driveshaft
Spare brand new fuel/oil filters
Spare rear door handles (can be used to 'de-lock' front doors)
Spare clutch
Known good catalytic converter

Lots of history from previous owners and some receipts whilst in my ownership. I never thought I'd sell so didn't see a need to prove how well the car had been looked after.

This car is a very good spec and lots of fun to drive. Does require some of the above parts fitting (FMIC for example) to allow it to be enjoyed to its full capacity but is ready to be enjoyed. Very well looked after in my ownership.

I'm after £1500 for the car due to its spec. The car is worth this in bits all day long so please don't be tempted to make any silly offers. The car is still in daily use so milage will increase.

Expect this post to keep being added to as I keep remembering little details.

Nothing Rover related I'm afraid Vinny. I'm going over to the dark side and getting an Impreza :sorry:

Really going to try and make sure this goes to someone who can enjoy/restore it, but at the same time I'm not about to let it go for peanuts :)

rpattern, I saw your thread quite late on and hoped you'd still be interested.

Thanks Carl, spur of the moment decision tbh.

Thanks Iain, so do I.

Mart, I wanted a blob eye STi Type UK widetrack but as it's my first Impreza, insurance was proving a little tricky. I've found a decent 02 plate bugeye WRX to use for a year or two until I'm deemed more 'experienced' in the eyes of the insurance.

How old are you I'm 32 and I only paid £400 a year FC on my evo 8 fq300.

Make sure you get a good one.

Common issues

Rocker cover gaskets leaking onto exhaust manifold.

Bottom End with bonnet up and engine nice and warm manually blip throttle from under bonnet not to rev move of a flick the gently build revs up.

Make sure box is smooth no notches.

Knocks and clonks from suspension.

If there anything you unsure of just drop me a PM I know them well ;)

I'm 29, quoted £1900 for an STi widetrack, £900 for a WRX.

I fully expect the STi figure to drop massively when I've owned one for a year though. These types of cars are known for their ridiculous insurance costs.

Thanks for the heads up and hints. I was already aware of the rocker covers but didn't really have a list of 'Subaru specific' faults.

Thanks guys. Having now agreed on a new car and the realisation that this is actually happening, I was feeling more than a little gutted driving to work this morning.

It is a nice car, just needs more TLC than I can offer right now.

I have an SP30 but with a little more than 3 points. That was in 2011 though so will come off my insurance next year which I imagine will impact it massively. Not to mention postcodes etc, insurance is a lottery but I'm confident that come this time next year, the insurance on an STi will have come down massively.

Wayne, this has only really come to light in the last few weeks. I certainly wasn't thinking of selling this time last month otherwise I would have offered the car to you when you were looking :)

Cheers Riz and Din, you're right... I've got an Impreza itch that needs scratching!

I know Marty, I'm overly attached to the Rover for what is essentially a throwaway car for many. Its not healthy haha... But then, its irreplaceable. Scoobs are ten-a-penny and easy to get hold of.

Haha, oh yes James, you can say that again. Got no reason to step down, don't have as much time as I used to but no reason why I have to give up on this place :-)
