Got a Galaxy S last wednesday - Absoflippinglutely amazing. Big thumbs up from me!

It should be getting the official update to Android 2.2 next month as well, which should fix all the little niggles it (and most Android 2.1 phones) has.

Ok..

The Galaxy S has a nice screen and a super fast CPU/GPU. However the software is rubbish, making it laggy compared to other androids and the interface is pants. Touchwiz is just awful. Many are reporting poor quality materials as well that scratch up badly. There are many complaints about it on various threads at XDA developers and Modaco.com

The Streak is gorgeous, but Android 1.6 is ancient. It should get a 2.1 update in early sept. I have one and its running the 2.1 beta. Its very nice indeed, massively improving the device. The Gorilla glass screen wont shatter easily, but will scratch so get a screen protector. Its big, but very thin. Main issue so far is lack of accessories, but that should change now its out in the US. Its been discovered that it uses a PDMI connector though, which should mean a wave of accessories will come out soon.

The Desire is the best all rounder. Far better software than the Galaxy, smooth, fast, stable and sorted. Its basically a Nexus one with HTC branding. Its the smallest though, but probably the cheapest.

The X10 is a bit disappointing really. Old android, less than great software, poor quality.

Some things are just SOO good on it though. With 2.1 you can run Google Earth on it, which is awsome. F1 timing 2010 is also very nice, if expensive.

Its not the first 5 inch phone. HTC have sold a few winmos in the past with large screens, The Athena for example.

Really its sold as a slate, a tablet that is also a phone. Its not really for those that use the phone function a lot. Think of it as a more practical iPad with a camera (2 actually), and phone abilities.

Froyo will have to wait, there isnt a froyo ROM yet, but we were promised one this year. 2.1 Eclair is pretty good. Rooting is easy with Universal Androot.

Ordered one of these yesterday, I'm not into phones at all and despise the i phone (every knob seems to have one), have the Nokia 5800 the last 12 months and was entitled to an upgrade, the HTC is quite small money.

In terms of value its miles ahead. Better than the iPhone and way cheaper. Make sure its running Android 2.2, most are now but some network branded ones are a bit behind because the networks are slow to update their crapware add-ons.

I would recommend insurance, capacitive screen phones dont bounce.. My desire is away for repair after i dropped it and the top screen layer shattered. Its hard to fix yourself and HTC would want about £140 to fix it.

From what I gather o2 aren't rolling this out 'till September over here to folks with a Desire, dunno about new phones, presume it's the same.

Dont know, but you can always root it, debrand it and flash a generic or Custom ROM. As far as i know only Orange ones have issues with this because Orange are gits and do something it that messes with the SIM lock.

I know its somewhat elusive for no good reason. Do a google search, there are a number of other sites that host it. Its not pirate because its free anyway! Be warned though it takes up a lot of space and the 2.1 Desire can only install to internal memory, which it doesnt have much of. A custom ROM fixes that issue though.

I got a lovely little app for rooting last night, one touch affair. As for the X10 I mentioned above, I hav found no issues or problems with the phone. It has carried out everything I have asked of it. I would still recommend it to others. The lass has one as well and is well chuffed with it.

Well im not sure of the current situation, but Custom ROMs on orange phones (direct from Orange) were an issue. If you dont want a custom ROM its fine, Orange dont totally ruin Androids like they did with Nokia Symbians.

Its just that SE ruined the interface. Compared to HTC Sense or Stock Android its horrible. The shiny plastic case is asking for scratches as well. Its not a bad phone in isolation, its still an Android but there are much better.
