PC help really needed

Post by stevedx »

Hi Guys

I am not the most computer minded but I have a problem that I am hoping you can help with.

PC had a paddy earlier all froze up nowt responding. So I reset it.

Since coming back one I can get net via IE as I normally do and Windows Live messenger is still working, but when I bring up outlook express it will not connect, keeps giving me an error message.

I am guessing that it must be a firewall or something. But PC was all set up by my bro in law ages ago and I cant get hold of him so I am knackered.

I know I have mail to come down as I have checked via ntl/virgins site.

Please help before it drives me up the wall, add me to your msn if it helps

It would help if you quoted the error message. It's possible you need to reset the mailbox settings. I never use outlook for email as I just log on to yahoo for mine.

Does the error message show when outlook is loading, or when checking for mail?

my first 2 idea's are that a) ntl mail server is down or b) you have some virus/firewall protection that is blocking it.

try turning off all your virus/firewall software. I can think of no reason why anything would block that. Ofcourse, you are on NTL internet i hope?

There doesn't seem to be a problem with ntl pop server as it pings fine and according to http://status-cable.virginmedia.com/vmstatus/summary.do there are no problems with email.

First thing I would do is double check your login details to make sure they are correct. Then try what Scott suggested with the firewall.

If this doesn't work, try to add another account with the same deatils.

Let us know how you get on.

yes I am on NTL/Virgin whatever they are calling it this week.

I didnt change any setting on anything, so shouldnt be a firewall, but then they were all installed by my bro in law, so I dont even know what have.

When I called NTL earlier, I was informed they are doing a load of server work, so basically to access my mails via their site, and not to bother trying to use OE till tuesday when they should have finished. Great Notice there guys!! NTL/Virgin pure class!
