Desire. Wouldn't even remotely consider any of the others, personally.

Can't stand Nokia phones, and had rather a lot die on me in the past. Every Ericsson I've owned has had an assortment of irritating issues or just plain expired. I've had a fair few HTC phones now, and only one has had any kind of hardware problem despite being generally abused and tortured.

Had a play with a HTC Desire on Voda earlier today and can honestly say, as a die-hard iPhoner, I'll be getting one of these next.

Very, very nice bit of kit.

Desire or iPhone...no other choice really.

The desire is a far far superior phone but has yet to come into it's own with apps and what not.

i used to love my nokias, i always had them as everything was changeable and not exactly a fixed thing if you get me.
The phone i have is a c905 which is a pile of junk strapped to a great camera, but everything is so fixed on it i want much much more versatility.
I love the apps on the iphone but i dont like then enough for me to get one over these factors itunes, no bluetooth transfer, awful camera, no flash, price tag :o
no way im getting an iphone as i need a decent camera with a flash, bluetooth, a lowish pricetag and 0 use of itunes.

I am much in favour of the htc over the others, but i was preparing backup incase they didnt have it, so wondering of any suggestions what you would choose for 2nd and 3rd best, now knowing that i need a good camera and expandability

Am pretty sure you'll be happy with it...really is a true competitor to the iPhone, far more powerful but unlike many smart phones before...it works!

So who else is using one of these?

Currently my Desire is rooted (which gives you the equivalent of admin rights), flashed with the Modaco custom r3 ROM with APP2SD+ and is using the Richardtrip v11 custom kernel that allows overclocking and adds a few extra features.

Its smooth and runs at 1.113ghz for a noticeable speed boost.

No the patched kernel lowers the voltage to the CPU in idle mode so actually reduces battery consumption. I cant say ive noticed the texts issue, but when this happened on the HD2 it was blamed on the way the network marks the texts. I forget which network it was now.

Rooting is potentially risky, and repeated flashing has been known to brick the desire. It probably because HTC have done a really good job of the security on the desire and the rooting method is still not complete. We have superuser permissions, but not access to the root directory yet. Really this just means you should find a good ROM and stick with it rather than continually reflashing.

Is your desire a network branded phone or an unlocked generic handset?

Id recommend appbrain. Download from the android market and visit the website (appbrain.com). On the website you can browse all the market apps and mark them for install. When you open the phone app you can then install all the marked apps. Its a great way of finding apps.

G1 or Dell Streak, even the Palm Pre is shaping up well. The only thing the iPhone has going for it is popularity through fashion fanboys. G1 is multitouch and full five row qwerty so if you do any amount of texting/facebooking/emailing then you will probably end up hating a touch screen only input.

G1 is about a century old in technology terms. Installing 'swipe' is a way around the hardware qwerty issue on touch screens. Its lightening fast on the Desire.

I have a Dell Streak, its a great MID, but its not ideal if you make calls regularly because of its size. Its a pad that can make calls really, not a phone.

The Palm is a bit, well, girly, like the iPhone. Palm is virtually dead now its owned by HP. WebOS is nice, but i see it going nowhere fast now.

Quote for truth.

Yep I use the G1 for one reason and one reason only, the keyboard. Only other phone I would consider would be the streak

Not sure about that. The Desire takes care of the iPhone nicely. The iPad is an answer looking for a question.

EDIT: Found the question.. Are you looking for something to waste £400-700 on because its pretty, even though its seriously limited and pointless?

Has anyone considered the wildfire?

You cant go too far wrong with an Android. Personally i think the Wildfires screen it too small for touch use unless you have small fingers and the CPU is getting rather old now, its basically the same as the G1 and old Winmos from 2 years ago. The Desire is quite small, its quite narrow and very thin.
All you can do is ask for a demo of it and see how you get on. Software wise most HTC androids are the same with only minor differences. The question is whether the Wildfire will get Froyo, the next gen Android, which is 400% faster (it really is) and has full desktop class Flash thats hardware accelerated. Im nor sure the old CPU will accelerate flash because its not based on A8 Cortex like the 'snapdragon' in the Desire is.

There is just SO much choice now its hard to know what to do. Soon there ill be the Smasung Galaxy S, which will have a CPU similar to the iPads (it was developed for samsung by a company later bought by Apple), the MOTO Droid X and Windows phone 7 Devices packing major power. Also dual core snapdragons with 720P screens will be with us by the end of the year.

Rovex, yes apple could put and Apple logo on a turd and they'd sell millions.

I set up my work exchange server email on my G1 today, my colleague was dead impressed and tried to set it up on his iphone. FAIL.

I still dont understand the Apple phenomenon. I really dont see why they are supposed to be 'intuitive'. I tried an iPad in PC world and found it very frustrating and stupid to use, i have with every Apple device i have ever used. I tried loads of apps and just thought 'why?'. 90% could be replaced with a functioning browser and decent bookmarks system instead of what passes for a browser on the iOS devices.

I like the way they advertise the iPad as having over 200000 apps. No it doesn't. The iphone/ipod touch does. That's like making PS1 and PS2 games compatible with the PS3 and saying it has x thousand games.

Indeed, it has access to 200k apps but 150K could be ditched if the browser was decent. The flash thing has NOTHING to do with stability, like Apple claim, it has everything to do with paid apps on the apps store that get around the limitations on a per-site basis, and moaning networks that love these apps because they offer less functionality and require less bandwidth. Its just really sad that the public thinks its a good thing.

Just lol.

Drop test is pretty pointless but shows how fragile it is (a friend with 3g has a cracked screen from a drop too).

But the antenna :jawdrop:
