Quickie... DVI to HDMI
Is it the same as HDMI to DVI?
I want to output my PC, via the DVI output on the graphics card to the TV, in the HDMI slot.
All the cables I've seen (for a reasonable price) are sold as HDMI to DVI rather than the other way around... does it make any difference? I dont want to connect the outputs to the inputs and visa versa by accident.
I suspect it makes sod all difference, but thought I'd check before I buy the wrong thing.
Cheers.
P.S. I know I could convert to VGA and go into the TV like that, but that's used by the xbox.... after it's split.... long story, lol.

DVI to HDMI /HDMI to DVI are the same, all pins are still going to link in the correct order.
it makes a HUGE difference as the PC will autimatically recognise the tv and give you the additional resolutions to support it.
I run my PC through my 47" Phillips and it is awsone, I only set the resolution to 720p tho as 1080p for pc use is way too tiny.
Where did you manage to get the cable for only £4... my 2m cabl;e set me back about £18 from Novatech.

I use ebay for all leads... so much cheaper than the shops and usually delivered within 2 days.

Quite right yes those leads can be got but... I have never seen a gfx card with a DVI Plug on it or a HDTV with a HDMI plug in it either.dreaddan wrote:Usually yes, but not nessaceraly as there are male and female dvi connectors.Headcase wrote:DVI to HDMI /HDMI to DVI are the same, all pins are still going to link in the correct order.

I dont think it will work hdmi to dvi works because hdmi is backwards capable. However dvi isnt the cable will fit but i dont think it will work. you can buy for a lot of moolah a box of tricks that will work though. I have a hdmi out on my laptop and connect it to my dvi on my lcd (hdmi port is already taken)It works great.
Well, it outputs... I can get a picture, if I set it to the correct resolution, however it's a really crappy picture.
Not sure why though.
Any ideas?
Otherwise I think I'm slightly screwed as I'm using the VGA input on the TV for the 360 and have no other way to get the PC inputting.....

Sheaf what res are you outputting at what freq?
MarkCoupe, vga is the same as dvi-A (analouge) so one of these would work.

However makesure whatever your plugging into will take dvi-a

I've tried outputting in all different resolutions, and at 50 and 60 hz.
Some display absolute rubbish, ie a view with lines all over it, everything messed up, other resolutions display stuff that is legible but is far from clear and doesn't fit the screen, ie it goes off all sides, plus the screen doesn't scroll.
I was getting crystal clear images from VGA before
I thought DVI/HDMI was supposed to be better?

as calibrax has said you may need to set the res and freq correctly for your tv.
In the manual for the tv it will tell you what reses it will support via what port.
I'm assuming your sending 720p or 1080i/p via hdmi? and not a normal pc res?
you may need to adjust the overscan as well to fit the picture to the screen.
Both nvidia and ati's tools are quite good for this. Though make a system restore point before changing your drivers.
