I'm considering moving over to the BT Option 3 package.

Not too sure of BT's standing as an ISP.
The package certainly does look attractive, especially with BT Vision option and the VoIP offerings.

Only part I dislike is yet again, even though it's classed as "unlimited" downloads, you read the fine print of the T&C's and it's subject to a fair use policy where they do not tell you a figure that is acceptable.

I'm currently with Nildram, who i've been very happy with over the last 5 or 6 years, but since being bought by Tiscali, the product seems to be a little less reliable than it had been in the past.
I currently get a 50Gb per month allowance, and a static IP address, both of which i'd lose with BT offering, but I now use "gotomypc" for remote access so do not require the static address any longer, and I never use the 50Gb allowance. I have managed about 40gb in a month, but usually i'm more in the 15-20gb range.

Any opinions be gratefully received.

The only silver lining, is that I would have this applied to my main house number. My nildram is on my second line, so I can keep both for a short time so that I can make sure BT acheives the speeds it claims and matches what Nildram has given me for a long time.

That makes me cry :( Nildram were always one of my favourite providers.

My Dad has a HomeHub and I've just recently set a friend up on 'Option 2' of their package.

Both reach good speeds (600kb+) and seem good for uptime.

I'm sure he'll be along soon to comment further ;)

i have bt internet.

never had a reason to complain about the service. whenever i have contacted them its been uk call centres too.

i did get a home hub with it (which i tried via ethernet and was fine). but now use a netgear router/modem.

my nan and grandad have bt with home hub too. never had probs.

dunno about the wireless side of it... never tried it.


thought you would have a decent brand modem anyway G?

i do have a rather flashy netgear setup at moment with prosafe VPN system for dual adsl circuits.

But tbh, I like the simple setup the BT system seems to offer, and it's integration with voice etc.

Just does seem like a good offer as i'm ready to jump ship anyway from Nildram. Once all moved over I can get rid of an additional phone line I never use (it's just simply there for adsl now....used to be office fax line) and get rid of some boxes (vpn, modem, AP) and get it all in one.

I do think over the next 12 months that the big growth area from ISP's will be the ones from companies like BT, Sky etc who have the ability to add additional value added services to the basic ISP function. I think a lot of traditional ISP's may well be bought up or have to drastically change the pricing or offerings to try and compete.

The comments so far lead me to think it's not a bad system, and pretty much just works.
I've done a lot of reading on the net, and whilst you always get the horror stories, the general consensus is it's a pretty good package that's improving all the time.

the only problem with bt is the customer service, you can never get through to them.

Never had a problem with BT. Max speed on my exchange is about 5.5Mbit although I would get 8meg if the exchange is updated. I've also never exceeded the bandwidth allocation.

well i booked it last night, and they phoned this morning confirming it will be live within 5 days and my kit is being dispatched for then also.

Not too shabby so far ;)
Lets just hope the rest of the deal is as good.

bugger wish id spotted this before you went live

check and double check your contract there advertised prices are full of hidden costs im on option 3 and was supposed to be a 18 month contract it now turns out its 24 months I was also supposed to be getting free eveni9ng and weekend calls as part of the package free this turns out that it costs me £10 a month on top was also supposed to be half price for 6 months this is refunded at the end of the 24 months, add to the wireless hub doesnt bloody work and you have to buy your own wireless adapter, I have now given up and had to move the p.c into a different room so it can be connected to the hub via ethernet, customer service is none existant tech support is a joke, I had a engineer here all day trying to get my wireless network up and he couldnt.

also supposed to get aload of free virus software but can only download it once for some reason as they dont send it with the modem and stuff i had to re-format and lost it all so had to install my own again.

so all in all im paying £45 quid a month for less than I was getting for £20 quid with orange and to cap it all off bt bill in advance so your first bill is 6 months worth of payments anyway to sum it up its that bad Im buying myself out my contract to go elsewhere.

Rich, my homehub has worked fine from day 1 and my wireless to my laptop works just fine too. I've had to reset it once due to a drop in the connection but that was possibly due to lightning.
I think you may have been unlucky.

Mike, all the pass codes are unique to each hub. If you are really friendly with your neighbours, offer them a couple of quid a month to use the wireless connection. Either that or just buy your own.. :P

Geraint, when the hub is first connected you will get a seemingly random speed until the hub has done a few line tests (possibly over a couple of days) while it is checking the maximum connection speed for your exchange.

dont get any real problems with the net on their wireless setup.

i have had a few problems with the vision box just lately but turning on and off a few times seemed to cure that.

call centre was in india whenever ive called.

You get free evening and weekend calls if you plug your phone into the homehub as it uses the bb connection. It's ok for voice but a little too noisy for faxing.

yes thats correct.

you should of got a new number with is connected to the BB system. you can ethier plug a std phone into the home hub or buy their cordless phone which attaches to the hub.

ermm..

not sure what you mean.

the homehub takes advantage of VOIP on the broadband connection. with this you should have got emailed when you signed up with a unique number. this number is associated with the BB connection. but you can only take advantage of this function by plugging in a std phone into the hub, or by buying their cordless phone.

yeah i have the 2nd phone aswell that links to my hub as im on the top package and at the time this was part of the deal but as I say im currently being over billed for mine but trying to make them see it is a nightmare. im probably just one of the unlucky ones

Yes although they do use the same wires. The bb number is too noisy for fax though. If you use the bb number during daytime you do get charged.

Our Homehub is very unstable. It often locks up or reboots itself, usually daily. Its our second one, the last one was the same. Many report the same problems, they are pretty cheaply made.
The hub phone sound quality is pretty bad to, even though our connection speed it never less than 5.5Mb.

Mind you if you have the option 3 package you can get unlimited free BTopenzone minutes which is handy for me.

I'm using a BT voyager 2110 wireless ADSL router (4 wired + 35 wireless) on 3 pc and a bt voyager I065 laptop wireless card with no problems, before that it was a BT voyager 240 ADSL router, again with no problems.
(all came from eBay)

had it all in place a week now, and touchwood, been faultless.

Identical speeds to what i had with Nildram. Voice Over IP phone works well, and can have BT Vision if I want for £30 one off fee. Not got that yet as I have no aerial at home, just sky dish. Not decided if the Vision box and Freeview is worth it to me as I have Sky HD+ and multiroom subscription. Expensive per month, but gives us good freedom to watch/record in different rooms.

So far with BT. No issues whatsoever and service is as good as I had hoped it would be.
