Remote Assistance

Post by Rover220CoupeTurbo »

Hi,

I am looking at ways of remotely accessing people computers for support reasons. I have never really used RA so am new to this subject.

The built in windows remote assistance would be great if it worked. I am aware of problems when using a router etc.

Is there anything else that can be used.

It must be:

Free
Not have to be installed on the other machine
It needs to be something simple so people can request support etc.

Any help or advice would be great :D

RA is about your only bet then, as its likel to be installed already on others machines.

but people who need support are unlikely to be able to open the necessary ports in the router in order for it to work. probably because theyve forgotton their password, or something...

real VNC is another alternative, its free, but it needs to be installed.

im not sure if you can modify the installer so it would install quietly and in the background...

you can run the VNC viewr in listning mode so not needed to be installed but you must have the required ports open on any firewall.

What problems are you having with RA?

The problems I am having is when someone is using a router their IP address is different i.e 192.168.blah.blah. So when they create the request their "fake" IP is given. I understand you can change the RA file but for some people having to find their IP address etc just isn't easy.

It needs to be as user friendly as possible, Windows RA would be ideal as Scott says its integrated.

How do companies do it? Ive seen loads advertising remote assistance.

Have a look at www.logmein.com

No need to open ports on the firewall. Just set it up so that the user starts it up when needed and away you go.

Two good suggestions there.

You do need to install software on the client machine, but once it's on, you don't need to fiddle about with it.

LogMeIn is very good in that you don't need to remember any IP addresses.
