job advise needed

right i have a bit off a issue .

for the past 6 months ive been out of work due to my ban etc . wasn't a issue as i didnt need the money and it gave me a time to replace all the windows floors a brand new boiler in the house and do all that decorating you know you should of done by then ...

anyway i have a bit off a issue

funny enuf it coinsides with me getting my license back sunday!

im a comms engineer by trade and i have just secured a contract at 150 pound a day working a minimum of 4 days a week till Christmas in phase one of the project . then hopefully more work in phase 2 .

im like great cool.

the problem is this afternoon i get a call from my old boss basically saying we need you back , as they have just got a big huge contract ! with a bran new car and a 4 k pay rise .

he was a bit of a knob to work for as in quite often payed me late ,not massively ie only by a few days .which obviously played havoc with my direct debits! but he did make up for it in paying for all expenses ski trips track days etc etc etc and we did have a bit of a clash of personality's etc

what do i do go for the contract job or my old job .

the contracting job is better payed . but my old job does come with a car and maybe a bit more long term security .

im just so like grr what do i do .

how much will you lose going back for the old job compared to the new?

Can you afford not to have the little extra?

Security is vitally important in todays climate, unless its a severe wage loss.

At this Time i'd go for the one with job security but make it clear you don't what to be messed around with money again

and at 150 pound a day over 4 day week over 4 weeks= £2400 before tax but i can claim alot of tax back with mileage and food allowance etc being self employed obviously i pay for my own fuel.

my old job is 24 k a year plus car and over time +16 p a mile fuel . so around £1600 after tax

If neither job is secure, i'd go with th highest payed job, just put money to one side for a rainy day

Go for the old job if its permanent; as I know all to well and once again experienced last week contract/temp work has no security what so ever, especially in the current climate!

As a die hard contractor who hopes not be get a permanent job for years yet, I'd take the 24K and the car job over the £150 a day one. A car is worth a good few quid. Most bosses are knob ends anyway, that dude you worked for seems not too bad, also as they are asking you back that may improve things, shows they wanted you back for a start so you can take most future criticism etc with a grain of salt.

On the other side, now that I think of it, £400 more a month, the ability to control the tax you pay and a 3 day weekend every weekend does sound nice.

Go with your gut feeling, as you say neither is secure anyway in this day and age.

If your working as a contractor you will have to pay your own tax and NI won't you or pay someone to do your "books" for you....

yes i will have to pay my own tax and ni but i can offset mileage and a food allowance per day against it and with other expenses i wouldn't pay much if anything . as it will be running all through a umbrella company etc

If you get tired of the old job you can always go looking for another one whilst still being employed and earning money, much easier getting a job when you're already in one than finding something whilst unemployed.

true i might see if i can delay starting at my old one untill this temp one is outa the way . got a meeting with my old company early next week to discuss.

True, and that could well work out well, but come Christmas time they might turn around and say they don't need you anymore, fill the vacancy etc. Worth asking though to see what their response is.

ok well Ive basically said to my old job i would like to come back and work for you but i want a written contract of employment this time. ( as i never had one last time ) and i worked there for 2 years or so .

Ive been honest with my old employer saying id like to come work for them again but Ive been offered this contract and im looking to start on the 27th. which im not going to back out on until i have a contract in front of me.
