Central heating timers

Post by Dave »

Are they a universal thing?

We've currently got a Wicks own brand one, and every now and again, it gives off a click.
It's never done this before, it's now getting really annoying.

Seen loads on ebay, so can i just wire in anything that looks ok, or is there specific requirements to what i can use?

Cheers

The click is probably the relay switching on and off if it is a room thermostat too as the temp is right. Otherwise yes others can be used. Have a look in the screwfix catalogue. I've got to get a new one for my conservatory vent.

Pretty much all timers for central heating have four connections.
Two supply power to the clock (be it digital or analogue) and a pair of connections which turn the boiler circuit on and off.

Some will fit the same backplate without modification, but this tends to only apply to newer ones, so it will really depend.

I know nothing about this these things.

All i know is that we have a back boiler behind the gas fire, and various valves/pipework behind the fire that is boxed in.

The only thermostat that i can find is on the gas fire, which then controls the heat output.

The house was built in the 1960's, so is all original!!

All there is, is behind the fire in some boxing is a load of pipe work, with various valves with labels telling me which is hot water/cold water etc.

It's a similar sounding click as when it does fire up, but it is still warming up etc at the times i have set it at.

If the clicking is annoying don't sleep in the airing cupboard.

BTW, I'm no central heating engineer, but based on past experience, if your system is that old you may well not have a thermostat...
