This has been winding me up for months and I find myself correcting everyone who says it, which I'm sure is really annoying

Re: Twenty Twelve or Two Thousand & Twelve ?
Two Thousand and Twelve.
However, since everyone used to say Nineteen Ninety Five, Nineteen Seventy Three etc it follows that Twenty Twelve is correct.
I for one won't be following convention and will be calling it This Year.
Happy New Year.

Insead of bitching about what to call it, you should all be taking advantage of the day off and be getting ready to hit the boozer. You all need to get yourselves a beer or two and forget about what year it is until at least tomorrow when the beer wears off

As bluerover has pointed out, what did you call 1990? Nineteen Nintey or One thousand, Nine Hundred and Ninety?
We should be calling it Twenty Twelve this year.
It all just thrown out as we rolled over a millenium and saying two thousand, two thousand and one etc etc has novelty value and is easy for the first few years. Plus when referring to 'twenty - one' it sounds like 21 rather than 20-01.
But seeing as 1901 is referred to as Nineteen O One, we should have started saying Twenty O One.
It's specifically 2000 that screwed it up. You say Eighteen Hundred for 1800, Nineteen Hundred for 1900 but for the single number of 2000 you say two thousand rather than Twenty Hundred.
However once we reached 2010 if you want to follow the convention that we have used for the past thousand years and will still use when referring to anything before 2000AD then we should be saying Twenty Ten, Twenty Eleven and Twenty Twelve.
Also, the fact that the twin towers blowing up is referred to as 911 worldwide annoys me. Sure, in the US it's 911, but when we refer to it it should be 119. It was the 11th of September, not the ninth of November and the naming convention should be dependant on the date system in which you are referring to it.
I also think the US system is a little crazy/pointless, but that's going way off topic.

In fact, thinking about it what do you call 1066? It's Ten Sixty Six. And that's a year that occurred in the first century of a millennium.

Re: Twenty Twelve or Two Thousand & Twelve ?
Yup, what Sheaf said, though it still doesn't sound quite right saying twenty twelve it sounds more right than calling the last thousand years one thing and switching to another the following 100 years. Who will be saying two thousand one hundred and one if any of us are still around in 79 years? I'm sure 1000AD would be referred to as the year one thousand, followed by ten-o-one etc. Either way its a pretty pedantic thing to get annoyed about

Re: Twenty Twelve or Two Thousand & Twelve ?
I don't think anybody who calls it twenty twelve or twenty ten etc are saying it for any of the reasons outlined by sheaf, because most of them wont have even thought of those reasons. I believe people are only calling it this purely to be lazy. It's the way society is heading. Text speak, street slang for instance. WHY do people put text speak in a flippin email?? You've got a Qwerty keyboard for crying out loud. STOP IT NOW! Anyway, back to my reasoning. I'm convinced that people have partly got too lazy to say two thousand and twelve. And that's why it bugs me that folk say twenty twelve.

Re: Twenty Twelve or Two Thousand & Twelve ?
Can both not be right?
It's just a number, and when referring to the number 1469 for example (not the year, just 1469 of something) no-one seems to question whether it's correct to say "one thousand four hundred and sixty nine" or "fourteen hundred and sixty nine".
Personally ive been saying twenty-twelve, but last year it was always two thousand and eleven. Just the way it rolls off the tongue I guess, I dont think it's lazy if there isn't a correct and incorrect way to say it.

Re: Twenty Twelve or Two Thousand & Twelve ?
Both are correct, but the media basiclaly encourages us to say things in a certain way, which is often wrong.
For example, the word controversy.
The correct English way of saying it is con- TROV-ersy.
The Americans decided to say it CON-troversy.
Listen to them say it on the news, only the older newscasters say it properly, because the younger ones just say it in the american way.
It's right, but in American English, and that's annoying IMO.
Ask most people now to say it and they've been brainwashed into saying it the American way.
Soon we'll be mispronouncing tomato, Aluminium (Aluminum) and various other words.
Another thing that bugs me is the use of the word 'Rent'.
According to all the property development programs you can buy a house, do it up and either sell it or rent it out.
No, you really cant.
You can LET it out, but you can't RENT it out as you own it.
Hence buy to let mortgages, not buy to rent mortgages.
Now everyone uses rent and let interchangeably, but they have different meanings.
If you point this out to anyone they'll get annoyed and say it's being pedantic, but it's not. It's as wrong as saying 'I just went to the supermarket and sold my weeks shopping'.
No, you bought it, you did not sell it. They are opposites and cannot be interchanged with one another.
'Me' and 'I' are used incorrectly all the time.
The words 'bought' and 'brought' are swapped over. One means to purchase, one is the past tense of 'bring'. Again, completely different.
Unfortunately, most people are indeed lazy and stupid. And they have no interest in learning when you inform them of their mistakes.
The only reason I'm so aware of it is because I did this too, however my parents corrected me and I have enough pride to want to learn from my mistakes, so now it bugs the hell out of me seeing others do it and not care.
Anyway, I went off topic a little and I think my dislike of people is starting to surface so I'm going to go get back in my box....

Generally, most people just go with what sounds right and to me "2 thousand and twelve" sounds right to me, so that's what I will be saying. If I live to the age of 136 years, I will be saying "Twenty One Oh One".

Personally I like to refer to it as twenty hundred and twelve. I can't stand it when people are lazy and refer to it as two thousand and twelve
.
It doesn't really matter as both are fine in my opinion, and in reality how often do we really refer to the year? Twenty Twelve makes perfect sense, as it conforms to previous conventions. I would also say it's easier to understand when trying to communicate with none English speakers. It's only been brought to our attention by the Olympics. Next year I doubt anyone will notice if they call it twenty thirteen, two thousand and thirteen, twenty hundred and thirteen, or two zero one three.

Re: Twenty Twelve or Two Thousand & Twelve ?
I was holding back on the 'brought' and 'bought' issue. This bugs me WAY more than the twenty twelve debate. Where the heck has the use of the word 'brought' come from when one describes buying something? It seems to have cropped up more prevalently over the last 8 months. I've noticed it a lot on here, and its steadily creeping into to p/heads and eBay adverts too.
