New MOT certificates

Post by PJW »

Just been digging through the paperwork for the BRM and couldnt find an MOT.. so started panicing, all i could find was a receipt for an MOT. Turns out this is the new certificate?

Upon researching DVLA are issuing these out now.. are these satisfactory enough to tax a vehicle? Its like a kids made it in office. MOT website obviously confirms dates, but theyre so easily forged!

I got an A4 sheet in black and white.
Just looked like a photocopy of a normal mot at a glance!

I got one of those when I took the private plate off the Alfa. Almost was at the point of calling the DVLA and asking where my actual MOT certificate was.

Apparently there are a lot of people cutting them in half down the middle when selling a car, so as to hide the obvious advises at point of sale.

I think the idea is that now the MOT is fully online and all the advisories are also recorded online - there is very little need of any actual paperwork anymore.

When buying a car I would always ask for the document number so I can check out the MOT history online anyway, before deciding if it is worth going to look at.

When we put the Fiesta through its MOT last October (which it failed miserably!) I couldn't believe my eyes when the woman put the new certificate on the desk and said - There you go.

It would be to easy to fake it with it being so basic. I much preferred the old style certificates.

The problem with this new MOT "certificate" is when they announced it they put a BLANK sample online in PDF format.

The document did not have any mark to state that it was just a sample either. Essentially they just uploaded a blank MOT certificate.

Anyone who has OpenOffice or a PDF editor could EASILY produce themselves an MOT certificate.

The DVLA are a bunch of bloody morons. First it takes them 4 years to do something about those stolen V5s and now they're making it so you can forge your MOT.

It dosent really matter if you forge the certificates though as it wont go on the system unless the cars been tested anyway, so it'll flag up as having no mot if the plod were to check.

Oh and the mot's are vosa not the dvla.

when you tax your car they know electronically if its MOT'ed or not all the ANPR systems know if you car is MOT'ed this country is now like big brother they may as well not even give a printout of a cert as its not really needed to be honest its all electronic now.

You say about forged certs i could of given you 100's of blank MOT certs when the old green ones where is use and you could of easilly setup the comp to print them but same again where of no use to anyone even when your forge one as they are not on the system

everybody and there dog could get either of the older style MOT's forged. whole point in the new ones is that the paper part of the MOT means nothing, its what's on the computers that count. can be checked online along with history, and is a very handy tool to check for clocking/history of bottom-of-the-market used cars.

You have to remember though that 90% of people buying a car privately never check that the documents are valid, they just see the bits of paper and assume all is okay because "He seemed like such a nice chap, must be fine!".

So yes, useless to the buyer, but still very very useful to the unscrupulous seller, particularly now all he needs is a blank sheet of A4 to produce a valid looking document. ;)

but heres the thing, any car worth over 500 quid and you should be HPI'ing it anyways, i have went to see a few bargains only to then find they had finance outstanding, and if your going to that effort its only a few more clicks to check the mot etc. its not nice to see people fooled but at the end of the day if your buying privately you need to use some savvy, or pay a bit more and go to a dealer where you have some comeback.

You should do, yes, but most people don't. Not saying it's right or wrong, it's just the way things are.

I certainly HPI check all cars now after some strangeness with the seller of my Alfa - turned out to be fine, but just wanted to be sure it was all above board.
