Having given birth to Mark and Carol thatcher too it amazes me how long she lasted! One an illegal arms dealer and the other a nigger hater, seems she had a lot to be proud of in her offspring.

She give rise to the whole privitisation of everything in the uk, which has recently gone on to the NHS, I'd say she might have been good for the time but the repercussions of her actions are terrible.

For international relations, especially with America and Europe she did a lot of good. Under her we came out with SOO much more clout than with Blair or Cameron who are pathetic by comparison. The EU rebate the UK currently gets is thanks to her.

Well I'm in the "party on her grave" club.

Some of what she did to start with probably needed doing, but she went about it the wrong way, laid waste to most of the country, drove the UK to be reliant on "services" sector, and now we've nothing to offer to get us out of the current recession.

(I'm not saying any of the subsequent leaders have done anything to alleviate these issues).

Whether you agree with the outcome of her actions or not though, I personally have to have some big respect that she was a leader who had a clear idea of what she was to do, she did it and she wasn't going to be argued with or pushed around.

Obviously if you end up on the wrong side of that, then it's not going to be fun, however sometimes it's better to make a decision and stick to it than to just be wishy washy and justify everything like leaders of late have been.

At the end of the day, leaders are voted in because they're believed to be the ones who can best make the decisions. You may not agree with them, but they're there to lead, not be dictated to. And she did that.
She may have been hated by many, but I bet she was more respected by leaders all around the globe than anyone who'd followed her.

The news reported celebrations in the streets. I really hope these people weren't celebrating some sort of victory because waiting 20+ years for your enemy to die of old age, long after they've ceased to have any influence, is the worst win ever

If you are trying to say thatcher somehow caused the economic banking collapse around 20 years after she was in power then I'd grab a bit of reality as quick as you can  It was partly the relaxing of banking regulations under Gordon brown that probably did the most harm to our economy. When everyone was under the belief that he was doing such a good job.

Like Reagan? Or Pinochet? She was quite friendly with George Galloway's favourite Arab dictator (who'd have thought those two would actually have a mutual friend, all be it 10-15 years apart!) selling him lots of lovely weapons. Global leaders, especially at that time, aren't much to go by especially considering how many of them are pretty nasty pieces of work! Its about as credible as Chavez praising Ahmadinejad or Putin getting bigged up by Assad. Blair is still loved by 'global leaders' so that says it all really!

They couldn't sell weapons fast enough to Iraq, mainly because of the war that Iraq was engaged in against Iran, who of course were the big bogeyman in the Middle East.

Just seen the plans forMargaret Thatcher's grave. Beautiful really, but I think they should have made the dancefloor bigger.

Margaret Thatcher died today. She's only been in Hell for a few hours and she already busted the unions and closed down three furnaces.

Margaret Thatcher dies and strolls up the pearly staircase to the pearly gates, where she is confronted by St. Peter, brandishing a clipboard. "Name," says St. Peter."Margaret Thatcher," she replies.St. Peter checks through all the lists on his clipboard but cannot find the name of the former British leader. "I am sorry," he says, "you cannot come in. Your place is downstairs, in Hell. Mrs. Thatcher turns and walks down the stairs.A short time later the phone rings. St. Peter answers, and a voice says, "Hello Peter, it is the Devil speaking. You will have to take that bloody woman after all - she is only been here for ten minutes and she has closed half the furnaces to reduce capacity."

Ill get my coat

I don't know  She gets hammered for reducing British manufacturing and hammered for trying to drive exports for British hi-tech manufacturing.

Two things bemuse me about Thatcher's critics:

1) That she's still blamed for current, transient problems. I do wonder if there is a time limit on this, or if she'll be getting blamed for an alien invasion in 500 years.

2) The shear influence she's attributed with. No one pays much attention to politicians and no one does what they're told to do. Except for Thatcher who single-handedly changed the morals of the entire population and made society greedy.

Yes, today I've read on the internet that Mrs Thatcher sold Rover to Honda cheaply, and then Honda used Rover to get around import quotas, all written by some expert on the Thatcher years.

The only truth in the above is that import quotas existed for Japanese cars.

Guess it just goes to show that love her or loathe her she has had a far reaching effect in British society. I think she'll still be blamed/credited for stuff for a long, long while to come.

Personally I don't (completely) blame her for the demise of Britain's heavy industry, however I do set at her door the start of the demise. Subsequent governments have had time to address it, yet chose/choose to do nothing about it. Financial services sector is king, innit ?

I suppose I can't blame her because I my reaction to militant trade union leaders is repulsion. Unpleasant, belligerent, and usually bearing a huge chip on their shoulders. Their actions are usually self and politically motivated, while loudly proclaiming their actions as selfless.

It's hard to imagine now, but I can believe the argument that there was a communist threat in the 60's and 70's. There were plenty of people who wanted to bring down the established government and with strikes meaning the lights kept going out and the country on the verge of bankruptcy, I can see the argument for decisive action.

You can probably tell I'm not a trade union person. I believe they once had their place, but not in today's world.

The issue with the services sector was that it really seemed to work. High-tech and hugely lucrative. GB is still the world's sixth largest economy (fifth if you disregard the EU as a country) as of 2012.

I want to see more manufacturing and engineering in the UK, but it needs to be high-tech stuff. There's no point doing what we did 100 years ago - that's stuff for developing countries to try and scrape a profit out of.

I was just watching catchup TV for monday and bugger me there were loads of programs about Maggie listed

There was a good one: 90 min documentary with Andrew Marr that was pretty interesting and fairly impartial. Lot's of footage/interviews from the time.

Interesting to note her firm belief in restoring Britain's greatness as a global powerhouse.

Mrs Thatcher's legacy is all around us, wrapped around us in this thread: the fact that still, today, most ordinary Britons believe that trade unions are 'distrustful, probably even traitors.' It is almost comical to hear working class people claim they "feel better off out of the union", because they "can't be trusted." Almost comical, I say. But not.

Thatcher's legacy: UK workforce of approx 30 million, fewer than 3 million trade union members.

I know a lot of people get upset at her memory, and I'm not going to defend her. All I will say is if only we could have another Prime Minister who had her clout on an international level. There is no way on earth Blair could have sealed half the deals she did with Europe or America, and the idea Cameron could do any better is laughable.

For all her failings she did a lot of good for this country as well as harm. Just all the bad news always gets remembered first.
