importing a car from Australia?

For things that don't fit into a category. i.e. non-motor related subjects.

importing a car from Australia?

Post by russ220 »

bit of a long shot i know but has anyone on here ever imported a car from Australia (or any other country) in to the UK before?

Ive had my eye on a particular model ever since 2004 and almost 10 years later im still feeling the same and almost have the money to buy the car and and fair few grand to spare for shipping/some kind of tax/|LPG conversion.

Im looking at a Ford FG Falcon XR6 turbo, 2nd hand rather than a new model.

i got chance to drive one of these for a few weeks when i was in Oz on a family holiday (was my old man´s mates car)

time to time they do turn up for sale in the UK but if needs a must i will import one :)

I've looked into it before,

It's pretty complex and lots of paperwork. Doing it yourself can save around £1-2000 it all depends really.

Here is a link, something to get you started....

and to add to that.

I have imported an atv from another country which is taxed the same.
Also got a quote to ship a car from USA.

Its pretty reasonable.
Basically you pay
10% import duty on the value of the car (this is the true market value, you cannot falsify this)
Then 20% vat on the lot. (value of car plus 10%)
Then about £250-400 ish on various document fees and paperwork.
Plus the actual shipping cost (which isnt that bad)
You will obviously need really good insurance if your bringing over a shiny expensive car aswell.

But its a very realistic prospect

Unsure about dvla registration costs etc

i self imported from japan, so australia cant be much harder, you just need to get the right person to export it with the right docs and then its pretty easy to be fair, just watch out with the uk customs as they can be real sh1tS.
Good luck

I got nothing to offer but that looks awesome, I was really tempted by a vauxhall (Holden) Morano VXR 6.0 with the corvette LS2 lump but missus said I had to buy a VW van  .. Being from oz what's your preference Ford or GM?
I know it's a contentious issue kinda like the Glaswegians love of football

If you going to go through the import exersise then it might as well the best version
F6 would be a better bet more horsepower better brakes and handling
310Kw (415 hp) as standard and can be upgraded to 500 + Kw if more power required

I'd only buy a FPR or HSV V8 if I was going to the hassle of importing.

Driven the SV6 Commodores several times, not a bad steer, not as quick as expected for a 3.6 V6 but it's obviously not slow.

Had a drive of the G6E which is Fords luxury version of the XR6, 4l V6 in those iirc.

I'd note that the majority will be automatics, also a 2004 is quite an old car and may have been chav owned by then, but will still cost quite a lot as cars hold their value pretty well.

totally forgot about this thread due to breaking my old ZS :sorry:

nice one for the all your info, ive been reading thru all your links and suggestions, seems its alot more simple than i expected.
The one i drove was an 04 so would of been a BA, i be looking at the FG so 2008-. Im in no rush to buy it as you say i never even considered the F6 version, the stock FG XR6T is basically the engine from an F6 BA. Either way the stock FG xr6T is still epic being what ~360hp and a decent torque figure of ~390ftlb from 2000rpm. I see that most are indeed the 6 speed ZF auto, also im reading that most find the auto to drive nicer and seem to be pretty reliable so again an auto could be lived with being as it would be as daily driver

ive seen a few ute versions on sale in the uk, but what with them not been a 4 seater and some being a V8 theyre far from ideal.

well ive got enough info now to see that there is a very strong chance iĺl have one in my possession by 2016, this will give me enough time to consider my options and find the right one in the right condition / spec / colour.
