Had my present today !

Post by andyr »

Finally got my Chistmas present today from Kate (well got to have it more like).

A day with a falconer !

Birds of prey have always interested me, and my Kate booked me a day with a local guy who trains and flies UK birds of prey.

It started off at his house showing us the different birds he has and telling us about each bird individually.
Harris Hawks, Peregrine Falcon, Sparrow Hawk, Eagle Owl ! (there was loads)

Most birds you are allowed to handle so that was pretty cool.

After seeing all the birds up close and personal, it's time to take his 2 Harris Hawks out for a fly.

The birds just sit very happily in the back of his Terano (not tied down) while he drives to some fields for flying.

Once out the car, the birds go straight into hunting mode which was awesome to witness, their ability to see such small things from such a distance is trully amazing.

If the birds ever got a little far away from us, the falconer just waves a small piece of food in the air, and they both come back like well trained dogs !

Anyway, after a couple of hours walking and flying the birds, and they'd managed to catch a couple of rabbits, it was back towards the car, of which they spot, so they fly ahead and wait for us on the rear spare wheel ! LOL

Kate took a few piccies throughout the day, so I've picked a few out for you to have a look at.

I just want to thank Kate for such a thoughful and unique present, to get that close and to be able to watch them fly and hunt was amazing, thank you my love :D
