Hi all,
I was hoping that someone who knows about insurance matters could give me some advice.
A friend of the family (yes, honestly it's not me) has failed to notify his insurers that he has fitted aftermarket wheels on his Jag. It's a genuine oversight. He's quite old and not very sharp. Something like this just would not have occured to him.
Recently whilst his car was parked in the road a drunk youth smashed his car into the Jag.
The insurers sent an engineer to assess his car, which is when they found out about the wheels. They are now telling him he is not insured and are waiting to hear back from their head office. Hear what, I dont know.
This whole process has taken 6 weeks and they are still stalling. They have told him to ring back on Friday.
What I'd like to ask is, if the insurer decides that he is uninsured, will he still be able to claim on the youths policy?
Has anyone got any other advice? I afraid the insurers are going to run rings round him.
Cheers,
Alex

Hi alex,
best advice i can give (since i deal with non disclosures), call the insurance company, advise them it was an oversight.
If he has a respectable insurance co then they will realise an older driver, just a set of alloys etc, as long as there is no young drivers etc or any dodgy goings on with the policy they should be pretty lenient.
1. Offer to pay any difference in risk if there is one for having alloys on the car.(this is what we normally ask customers to do if this situation arises)
If you pay the AP (additional premium) if there is one, the insurer should authorise the claim and things will get in motion.
As far as claiming something off the guy if you are technically uninsured, well its a legal minfield.
Speak to the insurer 1st and take it from there.
let me know what happens
hope that helps.

who is the company??AlexC1981 wrote:I see.
They are saying he can't drive the car because he isnt covered. If they are not covering him, are they legally bound to refund his premium?
Thanks guys
im very surprised that if you have followed the steps i have said then they would still be as arsey.
if they refuse to cover him, then they will have to void the policy, which will prevent alot of insurers insuring him in the future, as it gets recorded on CUE (claims and underwriting exchange).
what have you said to then exactly and how have you went about it?
not being cheeky but if you have went on the phone screaming shouting and arguing, then i doubt they are going to goout there way to help you reslove this.

hehe.....the ranting and raving isnt really my style. I havent had any dealings with them at all, I'm just asking for advice on his behalf. I have not heard him on the phone to them, but I cant imagine he would be rude.
He didnt do anything all week, but he phoned them today, which is when they asked him to.
They said they have not heard from the underwriter yet. I don't see why they cannot just phone the underwriter!
