What's the most fun slow car you have driven?

Post by Roboscot »

Following on from a pub conversation... We were saying how a car doesnt have to fast to enjoy driving it, the perfect examples from my experience being my 899cc fiat cinquecento which has a huge grin factor, and even my old 1-litre hijet van which was a hoot to drive. What else do people find puts a smile on their face without being in the least bit quick or sporty?

I once drove KyleAsh's old bubble 214 16v when it was four up.

Slow as f*ck but lots of fun trying to race a minibus from some traffic lights. The minibus won :D

was driving my mums 2001 seat arose 1litre today, but it wasnt as fun as i expected, although when i got to the petrol station, i noticed all the ashtray contents had gone everywhere so i must have been trying to enjoy myself at least, all within the confines of the speed limit...

I enjoyed my Austin Metro (1.0). Foot to the floor down some twisty B-roads (I live near some very fun ones). Had her up on 2 wheels once

My first car, a Hillman Hunter 1725 DL.

All of 62 bhp but great fun, especially haring around Yorkshire following night rallies. It ended up black Hammerite (painted it while it was raining) with a silver flash down the side, fur interior, grilles on the rear lights (sadly written off by woman driving in snow boots !!)

My first car: a 1971 Vauxhall Firenza 1300 that I had off my uncle. Looked a damn sight faster than it actually was!

Mini 850, 34hp (around 29 at the wheels), 650kg in weight, 145x10 tyres. Nothing happens fast, but it is THE most fun you can have on four wheels!

Mum's AX 1.1 was always quite fun to drive. Slow as hell but it's just a tin can so it's actually quite fun.

Definitely my 998cc mini auto, made even slower when 1st packed up on the box and you had to pull away in second :o

My suzuki was great fun too, rwd when 4wd isn't selected meant that you could power slide it.

Skoda Favorit 1.3 ( 67bhp ). Great car. Used to embaress a lot of more powerful cars as it was geared for acceleration.

It says slow car...that was the fastest thing you'd driven at the time, that's why you found it fun

thanks to the thieving scum that nicked my car (which still hasnt been found- but that is a whole other saga) I'm currently driving my brothers old 416 gti auto wedge- and I have to say, aside from the overly loud exhaust (which I bought back in my boy racer days  ) its not that bad! The only things I am really missing from my 75 are air con, and the seats which are easily the most comfortable car seats I have ever sat on. I think if I was to keep it long term I would be sorely tempted to stick it on some straights, lower it and strip it out - but then I'm not sure that will be a good look pulling in to the work car park!

I don't know if you would class it as slow, but between some of the horses vacating the engine (it is 17 years old afterall) and the chronic lack of grip thanks to crappy tyres, it was beaten off the line by my wife's 1.3 cvt micra  (on a private stretch of road of course  )

Fun? FUN?!!! It felt like it was going to roll over and explode every time you came to a corner - that's what the wine bottle holder in the drivers door was for, to dull your sense of sheer terror

The SOHC coupe is a lot of fun, and not a lot quicker than the 214 was... It doesn't really go fast enough to get badly out of shape and you can throw it around the lanes with abandon

Yeah, the AX is a total deathtrap, but that gets the adrenaline going :) Nothing like the feeling that you're going to die on every corner to make you grin

The coupe can definately get out of shape, if you're stupid enough

i reckon everyone has a soft spot for the above cars as theyre first cars.

i reckon either a 1.4 metro, or the works 1.3 hijet van. rwd and no weight for the win! nearly tipped it in the ice. it had 14k on the clock when the base scrapped it as it was battered everywhere it went.

mine was my old cinq sporting
abarth kitted,lowered,strut brace,14" punto wheels with 195 45 14 toyo,drilled brake discs,k+n filter,
made the most of the 50 bhp with mega handling,
anyone for round and round roundabouts at 50 mph :drive:
another good point was having a 10" sub in the boot, which was basically right behind your head, and in such a small car boomed
also stupidly economical,if i had to commute any distance i would get another one rather than a wiesel diesel

not a car, but tbh I enjoy a nice windy road in the highlands in an artic if pushing on, which compared to a car is very slow
but I digress...

best fun slow car I've driven was the mother in laws 1.4 Diesel Mini (new style) from Lanark to galashiels and back again to drop the wife off for an agency shift when she was still working on the wards, 6 speed but hardly pacey by any sense of the word, brakes were decent though and was a fun wee thing round the bends, even managed to better a mk2 Golf GTi while sotting him to death and making sure he could see the D on the back lol.

When I lived in Cornwall, a mate of mine had a 2CV...great fun!

Roll the roof back, stick the surfboards in, listen to the Beach Boys...radical, Dude! And you could take the rear seat out and sit on it!

No turning circle, whatsoever...but almost impossible to roll. Comfy ride, and great ground clearance for those out-of-the-way Cornish tracks to the best beaches.

Once you got used to the gearchange, it was easy to drive! :drive:
