Lost keys - I'm an idiot - please help

Hello,

Lost my Keys on Saturday night whilst completly smashed at a friends party.

The keys are most definitely lost and I've no spare set and I've had to leave the car in situ.

Does anyone know how to go about getting a new set as cheaply and quickly as poss??? I was quoted £160 for someone to come out to the car to take a mould but I simply can't afford that at present.

Car is a 94 VW golf GTI

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

i'm assuming that repairing damage from smashing the steering lock off and hotwiring it may be a bit more expensive (could look a bit bad when he comes to sell it)...also does he have the fob to open it...take off immobiliser etc?

Your only other option is to change the lock set. That could be expensive!

In any case if you have no fob you will have to spend out on a new one and have it recoded.

A VW breakers is probably your best bet.

Either way, cost of a complete lock set (even second hand) + cost of getting into the car (replacing the window you may need to break and replacing anything else you break by hot wiring it, or paying someone to come out and open it) is not going to be cheap.

I'd also be inclined to try and get the car immobilised in someway (wheel clamp or something like that) as if someone ever so slightly dishonest found your keys at the party, then they could decide to treat themselves to a '94 Golf GTi conveniently parked outside!

Just found out its actually a 93 so no transponder in the key and no immobiliser and I've been quoted by a local locksmith £120.00 to come out and have the keys cut on the spot.

If you contact VW they may be able to supply you with, or tell you where to find, a code to get a key cut to by a normal key cutter.

Bending the top out on the door frame with wooden wedges is a slightly crude, but common, way of getting into a locked car. Then bend it back into shape afterwards.

2mins is a long time when u consider i can get in a 200 coupe in 3 to 5 seconds with no tools and no damage lol (found out when i left my car in ignition when i had battery off, put battery back on and yep....it locked itself lol learn from ya mistakes lol)

luckily for dickieadams the *sniff* I love u! that tried breakin into his coupe the other mornin didnt know the method n trollied his lock with a screwdriver lol

This is really turning out to be a pain in the a$$

VW have said they 'might' be able to supply a blank and key pattern but both dealerships I've spoken with need to order the blanks in and reakon this could take a friggin week!!! Theres also the possibility they haven't kept the records as the car is over a decade old.

I've also learned that at 'some point' in 1993/1994, VW started fitting transponders to the cars and apparently there's no way of telling if mine has one without getting a key made and trying to start the thing. Best quote so far is £120 for a non transponder key and over the £200 mark for one with.

If any of you guys don't have a spare, please for the love of god go and get one cut!!!

he has a point, cos then u have spares if something lets u down, the rest u can sell on to make back some money

Buy an entire car for a ignition barrel and a set of keys ? seriously ?

Jimmy the door, remove the cowling. Snap the part of the ignition off that the key goes in to and then use your fingers or pliers to start the car up and remove the steering lock.

Find a replacement barrel and fit it in your own time along with the door locks.

Chances its got an immobiliser are slim. If it has cross that bridge when you get to it.

if there is no rush, then leave it be, otherwise, just break into it, far more interesting a learning experience.

You could check if it has an immob, but only when you got in the car, by looking around the ignition barel for a coil/pickup , but id say chances are fairly slim that youd have one... Things like that tend not to be introduced mid range, and usually bundled in with things like facelifts or model changes completely, perhaps youd know by now if it was an earlier or later type, or whether the key had a little thing in the end of it.

Eitherway youll probably have to break into it, unless VW will give you the key number and you can get it cut elsewhere?

Yeah, try some key cutters - most keep blanks for most cars. Then you just need the code.

If it comes to getting in a replacing the locks with some from the scrappy then you shouldn't have to break anything to gain access.

If its only a 3door screwdriver the lock open and hotwire it after stripping the column down properly to reduce damage. The price of a lockset and an hours labour to fit will be less than £120 imo.

It wont be immobilised just dont turn the steering lock on while your doing it as it will complicate matters further.

Cheers for all the great advice people.

Managed to get in the car yesterday by getting a coat hanger down and pulling up the lock on one of the rear doors. Ripped the column apart and luckily no immobilser so hot wiring was straight forward.

Gonna get a lock set and matching key from a scrappy but until then I have to climb in via the back door and start thing with a screw driver. Was quite entertaining for the other commuters at the station this morning when they saw me clambering over seats and crawling out the back door in a suit

I'm sure there's a story mate but I wouldn't know anything about it!!

if you live close to me there is a lock smith who charges around 15quid and can make a key from the barrel of the door or ignition barrel, but he may ask for your log books just to confirm car is yours along with id. he says he visulises the key from the butterflies? he has done a few for me and they have been spot on!!

Been driving around with no door locks and using a screw driver to start the car for about a week now.

My brother just called me to say he's found the keys in the glovebox of his car.

Must have put them in there for 'safe keeping' whilst I was completely hammered.

I paid £35 for a lock set for a 3-door R8 from a breakers a few months ago, with two keys.
