New addition to the fleet

Post by BazR »

A GTI track car, was lucky to come across this roll caged stunner on ebay locally. Picking it up this Sunday, pics to follow.

Hey Daz, it aint no. I dont think his car had a cage or anything. IMO he was after too much anyways. This wagon has harness, seats, cage etc. Pretty much ready to track.

Cheers chaps. Thanks on the offer BlueRover, I will get some for you to have a tinker with. As for the graphics being applied to the car, its going to be a hi-res RT logo up each side. Ive done a few photochops with the car in white. Keen on that currently.
There is a lot of crap applied to the car already and the paint job aint so tasty. I know its a car for abuse but I would sooner take the opportunity to strip and rebuild now before I get into driving it.

Im guessing its not an original cup car and is a road going version converted, if so i would guess £1250 - £1500 depending on engien spec. :)

I got my hands on her in Ballymoney Daz, just in a wee park on the Portrush side.

I gave £500 for it.

Road car converted, basic D16 under the bonnet. Once upon a time she was black in colour.

Looks very presentable! :) How many layers of paint do you reckon it's sporting?

Got any pics of the interior? What cage does it have? What shocks?

Not much difference between cup car shell and road-car one, other than yours is VIN'd and has a registration!

Re: New addition to the fleet

I very much doubt all the gear is 'top notch' and don't want to make the car something its not. For basic track days it suits me fine. It has a cage, buckets, harnesses and like said, a V5.

All that for £500 and fulfilling my hopes of owning a hatch, Im pretty pleased.

Suspension is 'meant' to be Koni, she is as stiff as hell. One of the seats is a Cobra and they are readily fitted. So all this makes me want to start from the ground up, have everything done not more proper, but more tidy.

Again to get all this at such cheap rent and in localy is the plus points to this. Long term plans is to make this the RT track car, to take to meets and such.

Shell maybe not , but the cup cars are a hell of a lot different to the road going ones.

Shell wise - they were fully seam welded and had a welded in cage and were strut braced and adjustable arms etc.. depends how much you actually call "shell".

The seam welding and cage do make a hell of a difference too , the tomcat cup cars are silly fast handlers compared to the equivalent road goer.

Yeah agree - but you could build one easily.

Only the front suspension turrets are seam-welded. "Fully seam welded" is a myth.

Cage is bolt in, with welded in pads for the cage to bolt too. I have an original RS/SD cage to go in mine.

Strut braces - your rear lower does the job :) Rose-jointed arms 8) for track.

Plus they have a couple of strengthening plates welded across back of each trailing arm to close the box. Standard bushes at rear....

If Baz wanted to make his "Roversport spec" it would be very easy IMO.

If its a road car it hasnt got any of those bits fitted though , so theres still a fair difference :P

I know what your saying though , and its a bloody bargain.

Wasnt aware of the seam welding myth, i was convinced the entire shell was welded up :?

Once I get the rear caliper free I will take her down the lane and back and see how she handles. If its worth my while doing I would add the features mentioned. When in Rome :D

Yeah, looked at a few (Coupes) in the past and none were fully seam-welded. Maybe a few have subsequently been done by their owners?

In fact, don't think the 216GTi cup car was seamed at all.

From the Rsport build manual for Coupe:

Next page of the manual shows the 111111's on the other side of inner wing.

Cheers

Seam welding is a bit of a bad idea anyway, that is if you are talking about fully welding. The shell needs some flex otherwise it will crack the welds. Close stitch welding firms things up but still allows the metal some breathing room.

Yeah - all the racers I've seen are stitch welded around the front turrets; 4" of weld, 4" of gap, 4" of weld, so on, so forth. All other welds through the shell were standard 'spots', apart from replacement sections (crash repairs) and bits added (e.g. seat subframe).

Makes sense - watch the vids of the races during the 90s and there was regular shunts. Hundreds of hours of welding to enable a reshell everytime doesn't lend itself to a cheapish one make race series.

Not to say that adding additional stitch welds to a shell now would be a bad idea :D

I have a couple of Honda engined Coupe and such about here, but this hatch is one slow mother. Had it out for a rip down the lane and it just feels smothered. I will look into it at the weekend.

In the mean time though, tried and tested/proven mods for this D16 anyone? Any Honda fan boys around?
