I reckon Germany is the better opponent for ye, also for the folks watching all around the World it looks alot more attractive in the TV guide than if ye were playing Ghana (no offense to Ghana). I think Ghana could be more awkward opponents and would encourage a more negative tactic from Capello. Not disagreeing with Limecat just for the sake of it but I wouldn't play Carrick, I put him in the same class as Heskey and Crouch, not at all World Cup class, I was surprised Fergie paid so much for him and I am continually surprised that he plays so much for Utd, specially with all the money they got for Ronaldo. If I was Capello I would start Defoe, he will be buzzing after that goal and when he is hits form he tends to be consistently good for a while, not hitting it in patches. I would stick with Lampard and Gerard although it's hard to accomodate them both, I reckon they both justify their selections on class alone and Gerard can play well out of his favoured position. Accomodating him as a support striker to Rooney and having Defoe on as well is a non runner though. Although I do think the English defence will cope with the German attack so an attacking English midfield is an option but one always fears Johnson may leave his centre back with a tad extra to do once too often in 90 mins which is a worry.

I wouldn't have Heskey in the starting line up and obviously Crouch can't start if Defoe and Rooney are on, dropping Rooney is a total non runner so if ye were a goal down with half an hour to go I'd consider Crouch going on before Heskey. I like Heskey (very decent bloke from what you can gather in the media and a very clean player, very restrained when taunted by mongs too) but as a goalscorer he doesn't pose the necessary risk at WC level and his workrate and slogging are not what I'd attack the Germans with Gerrard, Defoe, Rooney and Lampard. Essentially the Slovenia line up, presume Carragher will get back in ahead of Upson but I'd happily leave Upson on to be honest. Barry hasn't done much wrong (I haven't seen the full games though) and Lennon or Milner is really a coin toss, at their best I don't think there is much between them. I'd leave James in goal too, I couldn't see sense in changing the keeper again.

I reckon Defoe must start though, if he starts Heskey or Crouch I'd be disgusted unless Rooney is injured or on the bowl or something. I would strongly expect England to beat Germany in the 90 mins.

I cannot disagree with a lot of that. I don't like Carrick as a player but as an extra defensive mid he was the only option I could think of for someone to add to mark Ozil out of the game whilst still maintaining a protection for the back line with Barry as if Carragher is back, the central 2 are not very quick - far from it. Off Upsons game, I would keep him over Carragher for the next game TBH.

A lot of options out there but IMO Ozil is the threat, sod Podolski, I don't rate him against big teams. Without looking up his scoring record I would be surprised if he has scored more than 1/2 against a BIG national team, he just abuses crap ones.

Yeah, Upson does have the adv over Carragher with the bit of pace, Johnson going attacking can leave the CBs that bit exposed. Leaving the CBs a tad exposed could bring out the worst in James I reckon. Very doomsday scenario but sh1t like that generally happens, I'd start Upson but I reckon Capello will play Carragher. I hope I'm wrong and really.

James is the best shot stopper of the lot though and Green has already taken his token howler for him!

Johnson worries me, he is CRAP (didn't Liverpool pay £17m or something for him?). Imagine him against Messi? OMFG, it will be savage.

I think Ashley Cole has generally been good so far, not as much as the pundits have made out, there were a good few times when he wasn't even on screen after England lost the ball - him doing so on one of the major ones when I was screaming at the telly. He was literally walking back. He is the best left back in the World IMO but he isn't upto his usual high standards.

I don't think Rooney will shine at all for England. He is struggling physically from the end of the season with Man U to now. I am glad that Defoe started the game though. He had a pretty quiet second half after the chance he had in the first few min at the start of the 2nd half.

Yeah Gerrard has defo got to start in centre imo but id play rooney on his own up front, gerrard just behind, not only is this his best position but they link up really well, that way we can play lampard and barry in centre to give us a solid midfield diamond with gerrard just in front, or barry playing the holding role to give both gerrard and lampard the attacking roles. Cole to start on left and milner on right. Like i said earlier in the thread, lennon, granted has improved as a player, has pace and is a good addition, but he cannot cross for tuffees, at least milner has a good end product and tbf he runs his socks off and has alot more to his game than lennon.

Crouch isnt my favourite player in the world, but he`s got a good goal ratio for england and if the don is going to play 2 up front then id personally like to see him play alongside roony, although defoe did do well yesterday and is the kind of poacher you need in important games.

Upson played well with terry bar a few misjudged passes, but carragher should start against the germans, he`s alot like terry in the fact he`d bust a nut to defend our goal,
and has the experience needed at this stage.

I think we`ve got a chance :)

This will be the first game I will look forward to seeing, I have an interest in the Spain game on Friday but England Germany is a class fixture, as I said above I reckon ye'll beat them in 90 mins. Was just talking to an English dude here at work that's over here for a few days, he reckons 'twill go to penalties, think someone else said that in here.

Lad from here is over in Leeds this week, plenty of mini skirt about last night apparently.
