what would you do with a grand?

For things that don't fit into a category. i.e. non-motor related subjects.

what would you do with a grand?

Post by PJW »

If you had £1k lying about, what would you buy?

Some rules:

Fun plays a major part
Road Legal
Not an import.
+1 for turbo.
Not a 600 or 800 (too big)

You're pretty limited mate, even a 220 turbo (best value fast car) is not gonna be healthy for a grand.

I'd pay it straight off my mortgage. In fact, that's exactly what I have been doing recently...

If I was in the market for a car I'd save some more and buy something for £3k - £4k as I think that's a better price range for the price/age/mileage/quality trade off...

However, IF I had to buy a car for that kind of money I'd be sending markcoupe a PM ASAP and buying that 220GTi-T.

Anyway Alex you are telling fibs :P You would I imagine bring your good lady on a nice trip somewhere.

probably buy a 620ti , and get rid of the jag. it just drinks petrol :(

Could quite easily sell the jag and get a ti anyways, but that would involve being without a car for a while...

If I was you,. I'd buy an e30/e36 325. You could get an average one with tax and ticket for that money then drive it into the ground.

If I was me, I'd spunk it all on women and alcohol.

I'd like to say I'd buy my old 420 turbo back...
91 Citroen BX GTi 8v - bought March 13
95 Ford Mondeo 1.8i Ghia - March 11 - March 13 - scrapped
98 620 SLDi - July 08 - March 11
97 420 GSDi - dumped in France
94 420 GSi Turbo, 235bhp. Dec 03 - May 08, still missed
93 214 Si - June 02 - Feb 04

Saw *that* coming.

With a grand, right now?

I think I'd probably spend it on various parts on the Vitty.

Silicon hoses, forged pistons, get all the dents pulled out, one of Wilky's lovely rebuilt S14 T28s, steel caged bearings for the whole 'box, alloy expansion tank and top coolant rail...

Just see how far it goes!

Is a TI really worth the investment? I reckon thats a pretty good path to go down for me when i get back alongside however they are massive, and there doesnt seem to be many left to be honest. I just want to get something with a turbo in it for about a grand, maybe a little over.

why does it have to have a turbo?

The only benefit they give is easy tuning... but for a grand you're not going to be doing much tuning....

I didnt think they were that cheap to be honest.

Munky, youll just have to face the fact that im not going to buy a BMW, not today, not any.. :D

And I, much as the rest of the people on here, love it when a T16 turbo comes in. Thats why.

I know... but there are a lot better cars out there than a ti. Not saying they are bad cars, but there are better for the money imo.

If you wanted a t16, why didnt you ask 'what car would you buy for a grand, out of a ti, a ti, or a ti?'

Buy some banking shares and watch it at least double over the next year.

If you had done the same in Barclays in feb it would now be worth £4k

when I sold my low mileage well looked after (until I got it and made the bodywork crunchy) ti sold for £300 a few months ago.

All it needed was paintwork to be as good an example as it was when I got my grubby little mitts on it.

You could get one in average condition, that you wouldnt be scared to have some fun in, in case you scratched the paint (as your question suggests) for £500 or less.
