HID single bulb kit?
Is it possible to buy a single bulb 50W H1 HID kit (or similar)?
If they can be had and cheap I'm thinking about pimping one of those big old torches with the car headlamp bulb and 6V lead acid battery (going to 12V Lithium, obviously)...

Re: HID single bulb kit?
Yes perfectly possible. Look for motorbike kits or simply buy the ballast and the bulb seperately.

Oh and most of those old torches use H3 bulbs!

I didn't think about motorcycles...
Looking again now, it'd need to be 100W HID to be bright and they get pricey (for a silly toy). 600W incandescent aircraft landing light looks tempting...

£10 for a 100W HID kit?
The cheapest I can see are £45, from HongKong.

Why does it need to be 100w?
The 50w ones are more than enough for most people!

Re: HID single bulb kit?
Because it's only equivalent to around 150-200W of incandescent. Why go big, when you can just as easily go really big?

Re: HID single bulb kit?
anything over 55W is... plus 100W will likely melt the headlights in time as they give out some amount of heat
Re: HID single bulb kit?
Interesting thanks for that. Had considered getting these for 25.

ah right
Re: HID single bulb kit?
Anthony, by the time youve bought the hid kit and lion battery you may aswell of bought a hid torch. I got a 75w hid for about £80 iirc. Its a nice bit of kit to. And much easier to bludgeon burglers to death with after you blind them.
That said, i dont think its that much brighter than a lightly modded halogen torch I had running a 12v lead acid battery. The biggest benefit is the hid with the lion battery is a fraction of the weight and lasts twice as long.
When i did a side by side with an average car main beam my hid torch only offered greater range and a nicer light.
An interesting bulb that is cheaper to get hold of are cree leds, these are extremly bright for there size. But given your starting point it would take the most powerful cree available to only match a 55/65w Hx . Although power consumption is minimal.
