Re: D'oh
• In the same year, a sign for pedestrians in Cardiff reading 'Look Right' in English read 'Look Left' in Welsh.
Probably someone from swansea snuck into cardiff council with a devious plan to rid the world of cardiff's residents in a bid for swansea to become capital of wales...
Or it was done on purpose by cardiff council and they put it in splott, so they could get rid of splotts residents and finally rid their town of a place with such a silly name...
Or not...

Lets be honest, they should just ditch welsh anyway. I heard a statistic that only 14% of welsh people can speak it.• Cyclists between Cardiff and Penarth in 2006 were left confused by a bilingual road sign telling them they had problems with an "inflamed bladder".

Nice to see my home town still has its act together!• Football fans at a FA Cup tie between Oldham and Chasetown - two English teams - in 2005 were left scratching their heads after a Welsh-language hoarding was put up along the pitch. It should have gone to a match in Merthyr Tydfil.
• Cyclists between Cardiff and Penarth in 2006 were left confused by a bilingual road sign telling them they had problems with an "inflamed bladder".
I think thats the best one, i wonder where the inflamed bladder came from?!?

Re: D'oh
It's still widely spoken. Although at one time it was considered the language of the uneducated classes, it is now currently fashionable for middle class families to send their children to welsh speaking schools. Some people in America actually learn the language through educational websites designed for distance learning. There are some people who are now fluent but who have not yet visited Wales!radddogg wrote:Lets be honest, they should just ditch welsh anyway. I get BBC Wales and S4C and we used to get HTV Cymru here in Wexford. I find it a very difficult language to understand as it is completely different from Irish and Scots Gaelic. I hear that it's similar to Breton though.
Re: D'oh
Better-off people who fall within the boundaries of Splott (pronounced SPLOTT, as it looks), say "oh yes, we reside in Spleau" like its a central French region near Massif Céntral.
It's not very widely spoken but it is coming back, particuarly as Welsh-speakers find employment within Wales easier, and at better wages statistically.
It's quite easy to pick up, reading and writing is straight forward - pronunciation and execution a little more difficult.
Some beauties there I didn't see the ones at the bottom

Are there ANY better-off people that actually live there? It was a bit of a dive when I was there... but that was before all the money got poured into cardiff bay. Has it gone upmarket now cos its close to the new development?

Only very slightly mate, the money influx stops more-or-less at the Wharf link road / magic roundabout sort of area. The Maltings end of Splott has had a lick of paint mind you. Re: D'oh
I'm not there anymore. The wife went to uni in cardiff so we lived there for a couple of years. We were in one of the tiny ex-miners terraces right by the train tracks.-Alex- wrote:Only very slightly mate, the money influx stops more-or-less at the Wharf link road / magic roundabout sort of area. (edge of old Splott!).
I rate cardiff as one of the nicer cities I've lived in, second to Norwich (but I'm biased as thats where I was born). Lots of history coupled with a nice forward thinking local government not afraid to take a few risks.
That was back in the late 90's though so its probably changed quite a bit now.

Re: D'oh
Hahaha! Whenever I am in north Wales I hear it being spoken a lot, but I think they must often intersperse Welsh words with English. Sometimes though their accent or cadence is so strong that i might be hearing English but thinking it is Welsh!radddogg wrote:Its easy, just pretend you're hocking a loogie and say 'isn't it' after every sentence-Alex- wrote: It's quite easy to pick up, reading and writing is straight forward - pronunciation and execution a little more difficult.

And there's me trying to be serious about my nationality - I've no shame at all about being Welsh isn't it see boyo. Agree with Irish too, in some parts the accent is so strong and rhythmical, normal English words become Norse/Martian!
You're welcome to come back Munky, if you think positively after being in Splott of all places you should try a nicer part !
I'm more Welsh than English but my dad is a properrr worzzzel and we live in a pocket of little England (read: Roman town) within Glamorgan, so it's 50/50 really. Like Ryan Giggs, well not really, he pretends he isn't Welsh at all

Whoever they used for translation is obviously an idiot. Why send a reply in Welsh, about translation work, to someone you know doesn't know welsh?
It's a waste of time anyway! Road signs should be in English, bi-lingual-everything is a PITA.

I'm a bit welsh... well.. my surname was originally Davies... which is welsh apparently. I changed it when I was 18 though to annoy my parents... it worked.-Alex- wrote: You're welcome to come back Munky, if you think positively after being in Splott of all places you should try a nicer part !It's the same as it was in the nineties but with more money spent within Cardiff, on arts and on the transport system (you'd love the linkroad!) If you live outside though it's a bit of a pig at times to get in - same everywhere!

It is hard to remember anything nice about Splott.... We lived in LLandaff for a while too, maybe thats where the positive memories come from.. it was a very long time ago.
