AAAAARGH! Worst journey ever...

Post by TomcatDan »

Commencing Offloading...

I've had to fly to Norway today to do some bits and bobs to move them to Exchange instead of Lotus Notes.

Left yesterday at 1600hrs. Pleasant taxi ride, I figured that it was going to be a good trip. How wrong I was. I stopped at the duty free and bought some smokes for me and my housemate. I checked with the woman in the duty free shop and she looked on her computer and said 400 would be fine for me to bring into Norway and I wouldn't have to declare them. Great. Then I found my flight had been delayed by an hour. Ah well couldn't be helped. The flight was one of the roughest I've ever had, constant turbulence that was so bad they couldn't bring the trolley round and even the cabin crew spent the entire flight strapped in. Still, alls well that ends well and we made it to the ground without exploding, so that's a positive thing... Pretty much the last positive thing to do with that journey however!

It took nearly an hour for our bags to be offloaded, and of course they were soaked through along with all the clothes inside them. Fortunately the laptop survived (I took my work and home one you see... and the home one was in my suitcase). I hit customs and went through the green gate as the woman at the duty free had said would be fine, got pulled into the side area for a random check and was still convinced I had nothing to worry about at that point. Then the, admittedly very polite customs officer informed me I was only allowed 200 cigarettes. Never mind I thought, I told her to take one of the packs as the price I'd got them for was still less than one pack of 200 at normal UK prices so it's not the end of the world. Sadly she informed me I also had to pay a 300 Kr fine (about £20) as I hadn't used the right aisle. I was starting to despair a bit at this point...

Significantly lightened, I made my way to the hotel only to find out our Norway office had booked my room, but not paid for it which they were supposed to do as my company credit card still hasn't came through yet. Ah well, I dug into the cash I still had and relieved myself of another 1250 Kr (I took 2200 with me from the petty cash at work). Got to my room which, admittedly, was pretty nice and started to relax, thinking this was the end of my troubles... I popped back downstairs to reception to check on the ferry time to Rosendal - 1025 and the bus goes from just round the corner so I could look forward to my nice lie-in in the morning. Went back to my room and unpacked my suitcase, to find my shower gel had detonated over everything and the carrier bag I'd wrapped it in failed to contain it. Never mind, these things happen. So I got my razor out to have a shave. And discovered the shaving foam I'd bought was in fact a can of deodourant. So I had to dry shave.

Deciding to call it a day, I eventually went to bed at 0230. Then had a brainwave based on my experiences of the day and decided I'd set my alarm an hour and a half earlier than I needed to to make the 1025 ferry just in case as my trust has been seriously eroded by now... Just as well - I got to the pier at 0910 just as the ferry which in fact leaves at 0915 was pulling in. The next ferry after that one is 1655. I made it to the office without any further ado, only to discover that the server I'm supposed to be working on blew a power supply last night and so it won't be up and running until tomorrow morning.

I also have had to spend another 300 Kr on the ferry, will have to spend 300 for the return journey, and need to buy my own food with the cash I have left for 9 days.

 <--- Doesn't even come close right now!

lol at the shaving foam.

seems a bit rediculous getting someone from UK to goto Norway to update a server?

It's not just updating a server to be fair - that's just a prerequisite for some of the other bits. But it's also partly for bonding since I'm technically part of Group IT (based in Norway) but obviously am in the UK. And it means I get to play with their shiny new toys as they always get them first.

Besides, the last time it was lovely, all went to plan, so I'd been trying to get my way back over here for ages. Oh how that back fired :p

I ended up using shower gel as a substitute for shaving foam. If you're ever in a position where you are contemplating this, my advice to you is don't. Pure and simple. I looked like I'd been involved in a fire!

Cableguy - you're welcome. The fact other people can take cheer from this thread makes it a little more bearable

Stef - I hope you're wrong, but I have a feeling you'll be right. Maybe the ferry will sink on the way home? Apparently we're expecting heavy snow tonight so that offers a lot of potential for chaos!

To be fair they could get worse...

However, if I survive this trip to make it back to England intact AND with my mind still working normally, the sense of achievement will be bigger than anything. Sod climbing some bloody mountain in Nepal!

So basically, most of it's your fault then.

1. You smoke. If you didn't then you wouldn't have that problem :P
2. You don't know the difference between deodorant and shaving foam
3. You probably got pulled over for a random inspection because you hadn't shaved already.. and after a week you tend to look like a terrorist if you don't shave
4. You cant read a ferry timetable
5. You didn't sort the accommodation beforehand.

I hope you learned your lesson :P

Haha, git :p

To be fair...

1) Fair comment...
2) It's not my deodourant - I thought it was my shaving gel but it's my housemates Gilette deodourant!
3) I hadn't shaved, which meant I looked exactly like my passport photo. Otherwise I don't. Although I did notice that apart from me it was all swarthy looking folks getting pulled in. And the one Norweigan who had a suitcase full of cigarettes and whisky was let straight through (he opened his suitcase in the departures lounge, presumably to make sure nothing had broken)
4) If there was a timetable, I would not have had this problem ;) The only place you can pick up the timetable is from down on the pier, and the only way to get to the pier is to take the bus which leaves the airport 15 minutes before the ferry arrives. I'm not THAT useless :p
5) I didn't sort out the accomodation because our Norway office were booking it, as I don't have a credit card to book the hotel on and they have an account with said hotel, just for some inexplicable reason they chose not to use it. When I quizzed their admin team here they had no idea what had gone on either. :crash:

So yes, mostly self inflicted, but then so were your points on your license and it didn't stop you moaning did it :p

This is my moment to rant and I'm damned well going to milk it for all it's worth!

So in comparision my trip this week seems like a god send.

Head into the office to pick up a hire car, find out Hertz have upgraded me into a nice A6 S-Line. Head out of town around 20.30 and onto the road, traffic is minimal and the cruise control glides me there. Heading down the By-pass on the road into Barrow, and see a copper sat in the lay-by, me having the CC set to a 'little' over the speed limit, thinks shite, on go the brakes, drive pass the copper at an aceptable limit, he pulls out, and 2 mins later i see the wonderfull flashing lights. Pulled over, copper comes up, head into the back of his car, two fairly reasonable lads, explain that as traffic police, they are not like a camera and can take into account things like the time of day, weather conditions, driving style, and response to the officers, so for that they would let me off with a warning as long as i was ok to have a breathaliser test (to help them with there xmas stats). So pass the test and drive the further half mile to the Hotel. At check in, get told they have let my room out, as didn't think i was going to show, so they had no choice to upgrade me to the suite, and as an appolgy sent me up a nice bottle of red, along with a fine plate of sarnies.

Heh, I remember walking that journey. I really don't like buses either. Plus I was a poor tight student.
I don't advise it though, some bits are a bit dodgy when there's no pavement.

Ritchie - I hate you...

And this day just keeps getting better! I've checked into my motel room. The cafes closed and there's no cooking facilities in the room, so it's cold food only for the next 9 days. So I went to the shop, got some bread, ham, pringles and the like (no McCoys, bastards).

Went to put the ham in the fridge, and it's full of mold. Tried the fridge in the common room. Same story. There's no cutlery or crockery in the room so I'm sat here munching on a whole loaf of bread. I called the guy I'm working for here thinking I'd get him to ring the motel and either get the room sorted or get me moved to the nice hotel down the road, and my response was "It's Rosendal, everywheres like that".

I'll speak to his boss tomorrow and beg I think. At least the internets working again now. And I managed to break the lock off on the thermostat (it was set to 15!!!) and it's gradually creeping towards 25.

On the plus side, this trip is turning into an educational experience. On the down side, I've got cold meals for the next 9 days and no meat as I wouldn't trust it with the fridge.

Ozz - I'm planning on quitting at some point next year before I reapply for the RMP, but right now they're all that is keeping my sanity intact.

Remember folks, this Christmas there are people sat in freezing cold motel rooms in a remote corner of Norway eating bread and pringles for dinner every night - remember them when you're complaining about not getting that new Xbox 360 you wanted. They're called IT managers, and they deserve your pity!

You say that like you know how to cook anything. The only things I've ever seen you cook are:

Pot Noodles
Rustlers Burgers
Some kind of meat based mess out a tin, smothered in baked beans, heated up in a mess tin.

Just eat out every night and claim it back on expenses. If they send you out on a business trip they have to expect to pay for your food, and for you to be able to eat properly.

When I've been away with work I usually stay in a nice little b&b/pub in Rue, near Faslane. Smashing accommodation, lovely people, 3 course breakfast and IIRC it's only £20-£25 a night :o
Next time I go there I'll have to appreciate it more :)

Definately appreciate it more. I'm appreciating the hotel I stayed in last time I was here that I can see from my bedroom window a whole lot more now...

Also, why the hell would you see me cook normally, it's not like I'm ever going to invite you round is it  I had vegetables and everything with my meat and chips the other day! Rumour has it that in the new year we might even be getting the electrical connection put into the kitchen so we can have a cooker, rather than just a microwave with a built in grill/oven. But that's the worst kind of decadence.

On the plus side, things are now on the up as I discovered that if I PPTP into the office, I can fool the BBC iPlayer into thinking I'm in the UK so I've been catching up on Top Gear. Yay!

Company I work for makes us take the cheapest possible flights, but they do provide good accommodation, usually a hotel like the Hilton or Meridian (£100 per night plus). Car hire is covered. Expenses are supposed to be up to £35 per day for subsistence, but in most places you can eat VERY well on half that! Can also use valet parking at the airport, so when I return, my car is waiting for me right outside the terminal :)

The downside? As I'm not a regular traveller, and I only do a couple of trips per year, I have to pay for everything up front (except the flights), then claim it back from the company. Which means for a week's trip to the US, I need to have £1500 available on my credit card...

You walked all the way to Crediton - jeez! I walked to Half Moon (where I live) after consuming lots of beer, and a kebab, and thought it would be a great way to save some cash - the sections with no streetlights are lethal!! Had to use my mobile phone flash to just about be able to make out the edge of the road - never again!

people who walk down country roads in the middle of the night where there is no pavement or street lights p1ss me off. Bad enough in the day time, let alone when its dark. Same with cyclists.

"Oh its my right to do xyz" yeah but your right will be removed after i splatter you at 60mph under my car, and then itll be my fault...

lots of small villages around here with poor transport, kids goto partys in neighbouring villages, then walk back 2/3am in the dark with no reflective gear, on bad roads etc, and you just think, are you stupid?

Doing it at night is pretty suicidal.

During the day, it's a bit silly to do it on a big (A/B) road but nowt wrong with walking down country lanes. It's the drivers that pee me off down little lanes, they drive as if it's a rally course with no chance of meeting anybody else. There could quite easily be people/a bike/a horse/a car round every corner so you should only drive at a speed which allows you to stop within a seen distance IMO.
Country lanes aren't just there for cars, they're there for everybody, especially people who want to see parts of the countryside on foot.
Katie's parents live in Crediton (Devon) and it's always nice to go for a walk when we're there... most walks take you through both fields and lanes. Most car drivers are ok and let you get to the side so they can pass slowly, but some are right idiots and dont slow down enough when passing.

Whilst i agree some motorists could drive more considerably, i still feel the onus is on the padestrian.

Cars have headlights, this means you dont have to drive down an unlit country road as if it was carpark. The world would literally grind to a halt if you had to drive everywhere 'assuming' there was a padestrian in the middle of a country road at 3am.

To be walking in the dark, on a country road (eg, not a pedestrianised area), in the night, without headlights, is rather selfish on the night walkers part. That might not go down well, but common sense shoudl prevail.

Obvisouly different roads in different places are different stories, but in the majority, the walker is too young/stupid/drunk to realise the danger they are putting not just themselves in, but also other road users. Cyclists arent too far off this. If someone has the right to walk on a road at night, what can be said for cyclists, or indeed cyclists with no lights? If you can walk at night with no light, then whats the difference of cycling with no light?

Whilst i drive with consideration, there have been numerous occasions where 'if xyz' then id have killed someone, a true 'accident' in the sense of the word. I guess i/they have been lucky no one else was on the other side of the road, and i was able to go around them, and not, erm, over them.

You could say "well there could have been a broken down car just round the bend" , yes, but the person breaking down didnt set off with the intention of causing a problem, whereas a nightwalker clearly knows they are slow/not visible, and nothing short of a jet pack and lumious jacket with headlights is going to make them less of a sitting duck.

I guess its just the area i live in, i get it all the time. I nearly mowed down 4 stupid teenage girls/slags walking in between 2 villages, yet im sure if i invited them into the car id have been branded a paedophile!

I think what some padestrians fail to realise is that its not the drivers treating the road as a race track, but the padestrians treating the road as a pavement, which it is not...

Wow scott, that was quite a rant :p

Though TECHNICALLY Alex is (much as it upsets me to admit) correct, you shouldn't drive at a speed where you can't stop in the distance you can see to be clear. Agreed this would mean driving incredibly slowly at night, but I don't think the people who made the rules care ;)

Anyway, stop derailing my thread, that's my party trick!

Jim, yes, the sleep would be good. If I'd had much so far. I've got maybe 5 hours total since I arrived as I always take a few days to adjust to a new place. But I'll get more tonight. For sure

As for what I like about the place, it's beautiful and there's no chavs, what more do I need to say

Well, actually it kind of is.

I mean, 200 years ago it was all just tracks. Then they evolved into roads, most of which now have pavements. But the ones which don't were probably there for the use of pedestrians/horses etc way before cars were invented, so you're pretty much on the pedestrians turf.

I don't think it's much to ask to slow down so you can stop in your distance you can see in. Even down little lanes you can usually do 20-30mph and stop pretty bloody quickly at those speeds. But some people drive like nutters... I've been left behind by people before in much slower cars purely because they seem to go round blind corners full pelt with the assumption that there's nothing there. It's not an assumption I'd ever feel comfortable making.

The thing is, what if somebody doesn't have a car and they live in the sticks? It's a little unfair to say the only way they should be able to get to and from their house is by car.

IMO drivers should drive sensibly, and yes, on lanes (when I refer to lane I mean ones which cars pass each other at a crawl, or have to find passing places) they should be aware there may be pedestrians and drive accordingly. However pedestrians should use common sense and avoid walking on roads at night, stay in single file, be aware of cars, get into the verge when they hear one etc.

And sorry for aiding the OT conversations Dan....
