Re: Steel Caged PG1 Gearbox Bearings and Seals
If you draw a blank, amateur me has been rebuilding mainly T-Series PG1s for about twelve years. I shall start another soon which has rumbling 6208s in its differential housing. I have built up a small store of the various bearings used in PG1s including the very high spec uprated 14-Ball Differential Bearings like these in one I made earlier with the 14-Ball jobbies. They are quite expensive for a pair.kevinox wrote:I see this is a old post but was wondering if you can still supply the bearings uprated mostly steel cage for a nasp bellhousing to t series turbo uprated box gearbox hybrid I'm doing? .I use steel caged bearings on all those bearings which tend to wear in these PG1s :~

Re: Steel Caged PG1 Gearbox Bearings and Seals
I have both those in steel caged spec. There were two versions/sizes? of the Mainshaft bearings in the PG1 if memory serves ... which is not always the case as it was years ago when I bought them. Other PG1 bearings were roller and at least two sizes of those at least were used.kevinox wrote:I have the diff replacement bearings already I'm looking for the upper uprated pg1 box input and main shaft steel caged bearingsand the lower uprated steel cage bearings

No links. I obtained my sets about ten-twelve years ago. I searched the web and came up with several suppliers. I also visited two local bearing specialist suppliers who were very helpful ... all that was some years ago. Spent ages looking at detailed specification data and learned much in the process.
I did find out that some of the bearings used in PG1s are the same as used in Motor Cycles. No doubt Honda's Motor Cycle division designers and parts bin played a part here when Honda expanded its car manufacturing operation years ago. I also remember Jensen Button having the NTN Logos on his overalls when he drove for the Honda F1 team. NTN good enough for Honda F1 cars, good enough for my MGs and Rovers. Still have some NTN Input Shaft Bearings ~ all steel caged. These. Steel replacing plastic caged ball bearings. :~

Good quality 6208 Differential Bearings are surprisingly cheap if you shop around. This is a very popular size of bearing used widely so manufactured in huge numbers which brings individual unit costs down. Some of the other bearings in the PG1 gearboxes are silly expensive now.
It must be several years since I last worked on a PG1.

Having nothing around in Cornwall makes going to local bearing dealers a no go haha my searches via net are not letting me see actual photos of bearings to compere like said I have the good quality steel cage diff bearings and a quality steel cage lower input shaft bearing and are picking them off one at a time as time is zero due to family and work ect as I'm building a hybrid u spec box using the u internals and the latter pg1 bellhousing to fit my k series turbo conversion.am only needing 4 more bearings now
I'd ask you do you have steel caged versions of the rj2024 lower uprate 35mm main shaft bearing, the steel cage upper input shaft bearing 3/LJ28 plus the two upper steel caged main shaft bearings ie 1x 3/LRJA25 and 1x 43/LJ25 Hidden away in a draw somewhere that you may want to sell? Thanks for all your input by the way it's been very helpful in trying to construct the ultimate uprated spec pg1 gearbox for my 18 k turbo zr

Re: Steel Caged PG1 Gearbox Bearings and Seals
Just had a look at my small store of bearings. Mostly singles which I want to keep as I know from experience they are sometimes hard to obtain and expensive when you do. This image shows the only ones I have as spares and can let go. Let me know if I can assist further :~

Now you've explained your Gearbox 1.8 K-Series project, if not already done so, I would obtain a PG1 from a 1.8 MG ZS or ZR and rebuild that. Then swap it for the one in your car. Probably get a good PG1 ex-ZR-ZS for about fifty quid. In fact, complete 1.8 "spares or repairs cars go for little money now due to near zero value of scrap metal recently.
I'm a keen enthusiast for the 1.8k Series Turbo. Have two as daily drivers. MG ZT saloon and ZT-T tourer.

I had difficulty sourcing some and that was ten years ago. Took ages. I have a spare pair still in original wrappings but, they will not be cheap. It's about ten years since I last used a pair to rebuild a 620ti's PG1 :~galleyzs21 wrote:

For my own mind, are you saying these bearing are virtually unobtainable?

The steel cage diff bearings are easy to come by as is the front steel cage input shaft bearing but the rest for the pg1 uprated box are a nightmare to find it took me months of asking companies for them and finally found the 4 I needed as last one end of line stock and pretty silly money for bearings but on the plus side my t series k series uprated 620ti pg1 hybrid gearbox is working spot on in the k turbo zr.

Regular 9-Ball 6208s are easily available. 14-Ball ones less so.vinny19791 wrote:Crikey. Nice to see you still posting MGJohn![]()

No not virtually unobtainable, just expensive and hard to pin down reliable suppliers. That was ten years ago when I regularly rebuilt TorSen PG1s. Things may have improved in the meantime.
By the way. I used my Rover 620ti today to get some parts for my MGZT. Nice to exercise those T-Series turbos now and again.
Saw a Lotus Evora close up for the first time too. :~

I have a gold label k7? montego turbo gearbox in my shed, I bought it off cableguy a good 5 years ago, never used it, never unwrapped it, I'm sure you did a post once saying these were decent boxes?
I paid £80 for it delivered, I am hoping to use it when I finally get mine on the road, obviously steel cage what I can, and swap speedo drives over?
Good story about the 620, just don't see them anymore

Yes, those Gold Label K7 Monty Turbo boxes were good, despite lack of TorSen diff. All five gear ratios and final drive are the same as fitted to TomCat Turbos. The previous owner of my TomCat was disqualified for doing 133mph in it on the M3. I can confirm that car was capable of rather more than that....correction... much more.
He also paid £800 to have his PG1 Type A Torsen Gearbox rebuilt by professionals shortly before I got it. Car came with that invoice. A few months into my ownership, I lost both 5th and then 4th Gears on a fast long run. Reached home using 3rd gently. decided to open up the PG1 and see what's what. Drained it first before removal. NO LUBRICANT CAME OUT! So much for professionals. I used a spare Monty K7 PG1 and rebuilt the TomCat's PG1 with the Type A using that. Every T-Series turbo I've since purchased first thing I do is drain the PG1 to check it has lubricant. These boxes had an unfair reputation for being weak. They are not but, any gearbox will be weakend if it looses it life blood. On any car. Heavy handed DriveShaft removal as when renewing CV-Joint rubber boots can damage the Differential Seals... gradual loss of lubricant then its only a matter of time before the gearbox cries enough! Here's the photos of the toothles TomCats 4th-5th Gears and the replacement I used :~
Toothless :~

The replacement prior to rebuild :~

The TomCat Turbo :~

All that is now history and the best part of twenty years ago. The TomCat was bought by a once very active RT member here ... and was exported out of the UK. Superb car. Would like to have kept it but, I have always had too many cars so I've been advised ..

I bought a red 620ti over ten years ago which had lost both 5th and 4th gears. Paid little for it because of that. Would drive only in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and reverse. Been there done that... No oil in box.... again.
There's more joyousness .. and hilarity ...
Cleaning the car, I found a chitty slip under the driver's seat. It was for a 1/4 mile sprint down the strip at Santa Pod a month before I bought it. Quite a respectable time considering no oil in the poor PG1 gearbox..
Funny old game folks and their cars ...

Kevin Oxford?
Anyway what Hybrid option have you gone for in the ZR?
For my ZS K-turbo i'm making a hybrid box , C gear set (620/ZS) 7 final drive (220) and a type B lsd.
The 220 box i had was one with a failed type A but it seems to have been rebuilt at some point with a full steel cage kit mostly NTNs.
I'm just not sure I should trust bearings that have been sitting years without fluid.
Also the diff ones would have taken a wack when the diff went.
Also If anyone wants to see Evoras I work at a dealer and race team in notts, open mon-fri 08:00-17:30 sat 09:30-16:00.
Some pics of our little Evora that could (had to use a pic form google for a racing pic as the up close ones on my phone show to many battle scars, tough year for her 2016 still got P2 in championship)

Evora 410 (from our fb page to busy to take a pic at the mo).

And as I've gone on photobucket I mays well share my gearbox ratio overlay graph to show what i am/have done with the gearbox for my ZS i'm building.
Green line is the set i've gone for to get the power down abit better and not spin wheels if the throttle is punched in 2nd and even 3rd in the damp. Also can't wait for 5th to actually feel like a cruising gear.
